There are ways to hold gold and silver prices down.

There is a strategic oil reserve to hold down gasoline prices and pay a little interest on the debt.

But there is no strategic food reserve, prices way up - only so much can be blamed on supply and demand.

And there is no strategic bathroom tissue reserve, prices way up - only so much can be blamed on supply and demand.

And there is no way to raise interest rates without increasing the debt.

These things tell me the dollar is over valued and that in the long run this will show up in gold and silver prices.

But the mainstream media is alive and well because there is sill a tiny demand for gold and silver in the investment markets, less than 0.5% (correct me if I'm wrong!)

This confirms the absence of a bubble.

In fact, James Turk, recently this month, June, 2011, said there not only isn't a bubble but that there never will be because people will end up using their gold and silver for money.

Blago jury: Evidence on Senate seat was most clear (AP)

CHICAGO ? Jurors among those who convicted Rod Blagojevich of corruption Monday said they found the former Illinois governor personable, but had to set that aside to consider what they found to be clear evidence that he tried to sell or trade President Barack Obama's Senate seat.

All 12 jurors ? 11 women and one man ? met with reporters after the verdict in a spare courtroom. They identified themselves only by their juror numbers, noting that their full names will be released Tuesday. Four alternates also sat in on the news conference but didn't take questions.

Jurors said the evidence that Blagojevich tried to secure a high-paying, high-powered position in exchange for an appointment to Obama's seat in the Senate was the most clear.

"There was so much more evidence to go on," said Juror No. 140. Jurors said they listened and re-listened to tape recordings of Blagojevich's phone conversations with aides as he discussed ways to ask for a Cabinet post or government job in exchange for naming Obama's preferred candidate for the Senate.

Jurors said they feel confident they reached a fair verdict and acknowledged that it was difficult to convict Blagojevich, who they said they found likable.

"He was personable," said Juror 103. "It made it hard to separate what we actively had to do as jurors."

Still, Juror 140 said she found Blagojevich's testimony over seven days at times "manipulative."

"Our verdict shows that we didn't believe it," she said.

Jurors said their deliberations were respectful and productive, and in a statement read by the forewoman, they said they felt "privileged to be part of our federal judicial system."

The forewoman, a retired director of music and liturgy at a church, called the jury "an amazing group of people."

"They did such due diligence," she said. "They were so wanting to keep innocent until proven guilty."

Jurors said they hope their verdict sends a message to public officials not to take the people's trust lightly.

The forewoman, who was Juror No. 146, joked that she told her husband if he's considering a career in politics, he'd have to find a new wife.

Gladius and The Bartlett Trial was one of the books I have been asked to review. So how was it?

Gladius is a 15 years old boy who embarks on the adventure of a lifetime when he is sent on his Bartlett Trial, a coming of age challenge he must conquer alone to prove to his elders and fellow Wiggins he is no longer a boy, but a man ready to face adult responsibilities. However, everything changes when he discovers what is lurking outside the protected?life of his village: a?tyrant?threatening to destroy all he holds dear. Along the way he makes new friends and allies as they all ready themselves to fight against the tyrant and save their homes.

This is a magical story and it is essentially a children's book. I can see the boys loving this one! But don't worry, any girl with a sense of adventure and a little thing for romance will also like it. There is a magical "storytelling" quality to it. You could imagine sitting around a fire in a campsite telling this story to a group of children.

Talking about campsite... There are some really good survival tips in here! I might just take it with me when I go outdoors from now on. Just in case I fall into rapids, dangle off a cliff or get lost inside underground tunnels. I did actually learn some interesting survival skills while reading this book and I am willing to bet I will not be saying that very often!

Prose and plot wise there are a couple of details the most avid reader might pick on. I found the language a little confusing as it flips from evoking a different era and place to very current English. On the other hand, this might be exactly what gives it its "storytelling" feel. There are also a couple of characters that do not seem to have a real purpose in the plot and, towards the end, the whole puzzle they are trying to solve almost feels irrelevant. Having said all that, "Gladius and the Bartlett Trial" is the first of a trilogy, so maybe all these questions will be answered in future sequels. "Gladius and the Sea of Lost Souls" (the title is still not set in stone and was a little secret Jason shared with me) is scheduled for release in October/ November this year! So look out for it.

All in one, J. A. Paul is a very engaging writer with fantastic descriptions of a magical world somewhere far away. His story reminds me of something in between "Lord of the Rings" (minus the?scariness) and "The NeverEnding Story". I also think this book would be wonderful in small illustrated volumes, maybe even a graphic novel.

The thing I liked the most about it though, is the fact this is a story you could sit and read with your children. It is interesting enough to keep both generations engaged. That is a fairly hard balance to achieve as a writer.

The joy of this small, unimportant contest is weirdly addictive; you come out of the film as if from a concert, playing the music of false voices in your head.

If you're up for a chatty riff, this is an entertaining one.

Leisurely, yet competitive, culinary tour de farce

The pacing is entirely different from the television version, much tighter and with a sometimes too-hurried drive to get to the next destination. But taken on its own, it's still absolutely hilarious.

What makes this so enjoyable is the bickering, the camaraderie, the competition and the friendship between Steve and Rob.

It's already a busy summer, rife with 3-D comic book action. If that isn't your taste, or even if it is, "The Trip" offers a vastly different alternative.

"The Trip" is brilliantly conceived and performed. It's one film experience you wish could go on a bit longer.

A comic diversion that aspires to the old Seinfeld gag of being 'about nothing.'

Frequent Coogan handler Michael Winterbottom directs with a light, commercial touch of absurdity.

A simple conflict ... that is almost redeemed by the subtly fearless performances of its leads.

Reunites the delectable pair of Steve Coogan and Rob Brydon, real-life actor-comic friends who play versions of themselves to highly amusing and oddly wistful effect.

Far less than the sum of its parts. The framework upon which it hangs creaks under the weight of injudicious oversight by Michael Winterbottom and editor Mags Arnold, who overindulge their stars.

"The Trip" doesn't really go anywhere you didn't see it heading, but it's worth the journey.

Coogan and Brydon, as they proved earlier in Winterbottom's brilliant "Tristram Shandy: A Cock and Bull Story," are a pair of pretty funny guys to spend time with; their riff on "We leave at daybreak!" is almost worth the ticket price.

It's pee-your-pants funny.

Recently, I came across a software which allows me to access great deal of satellite photos. Then an idea comes to my mind, I can perform some Feng Shui research with these satellite photos. I get mixed responses from strangers just learning I?m a writer. ?Some quickly eye the room, searching out the exits. ?Others issue a small but knowing nod, as if acknowledging my sad affliction with some terrible but incommunicable disease.

Frankly, I?m fine with both those responses. ?Because as insulting as they may be, neither reaction smacks of the dreaded Close Encounter of the Third Kind, and no, I?m not talking about little grey men from Zeta Reticuli with severe personal-space issues and a penchant for recreational rectal probes.

I speak, of course, of the Wannabee Author Clamp Down, wherein you find yourself backed into a corner, unable to escape or even reach the free bar, while a luckless (and invariably unpublished) would-be author regales you with a lengthy tale of injustice and woe.

?

Now before I go any further let me say one thing ? if you?re a working writer, published or not, and you ask me for advice I?ll be more than happy to give it, although why you?d ask me for advice is still a bit of a mystery. ?Want me to suggest markets? ?Sure. ?Glad to help. ?Need tips on writing query letters or the like? ?I?m your man, and happy to be of assistance, if I can.

I?m not talking about a bull session with a fellow writer. ?No. ?I?m referring to that peculiar breed of wannabee who is desperately trying to become an Author (you can hear the capital letter even when they speak it) without all that pesky mucking around with, oh what are they called?words.

Being a writer without writing, in other words. ?

I?ve been asked a couple of times lately if I can get someone?s book published. ?As if there?s some secret code word that, once whispered, opens the sacred portals to Big Publishing.

Hint: ?There is such a word, and it is ?Prxlqrtnmbthptsxtrwsd.? ?But you have you say it with a mouthful of crackers, and if you mispronounce it even the tiniest bit, ?tiny militant gnomes appear and strike you with rubber mallets until Arbor Day.

I?ve learned something about this breed of Wannabee that still amazes me, even as I try to edge my way close to the sandwich tray ? the book they so desperately want to sell?

?

They haven?t written it yet.

?

Seriously. ?It?s always a ?concept? or an ?outline? or the ever-popular ?great idea.? ?Never anything so mundane as several hundred pages of manuscript.

?

About half the time, during these encounters, I?m asked if I would like to help out by actually taking their brilliant idea and writing the actual book.

It?s usually at this point that make a break for the bar in earnest, because there?s no easy way out of this situation. ?I?ve tried being blunt, being evasive, being cruel, being suddenly overcome by lycanthropy. ?Nothing seems to deter the more determined of the But I Have a Great Idea set; like Romero zombies, they keep coming, until you flee the room entirely or, in the most desperate situations, ?unfriend them on Facebook.

There?s only one way to see your work published, and as I?m sure you know it?s to write and keep writing and submit and keep submitting. ?No magic words. ?No secret handshakes or sly winks. ?

?

Just hard work, and lots of it.

Book Review: Love on the Left Bank by Ed van der Elsken ...

Publishers have responded to the demand for collectible photobooks in a variety of ways. Errata Editions reissues highly valued titles, like Paul Graham's Beyond Caring (reviewed here last week), but resizes them to fit a uniform template. Not that I don't want the whole collection. The reissue efforts of Dewi Lewis Publishing may not have the depths of the growing Errata catalog (up to a dozen and counting in the Books on Books series), but they have created magnificent facsimiles of a number of classic photo books, from William Klein's New York (its reissue now out-of-print and collectible) to Martin Parr's The Last Resort (reviewed here last month), to this week's title.

Dutch photographer Edward van Elsken published over 20 photobooks in his lifetime. His 1956 classic Love on the Left Bank is a fine example of the photobook as visual literature, for in spirit and texture it comes off as a marriage between Kerouac's On the Road and Robert Frank's The Americans (separate if related works - advantage, Frank).

This fictionalized book-length photo essay follows the ill-fated love affair of a Mexican hitchhiker with a woman of Paris named Ann against the backdrop of a Left Bank that was then one of the great epicenters of art and culture. High-contrast, grainy black and white film captures the excitement and energy of youth and the city, and the varied page layouts keep the narrative moving. Spreads of jagged smaller panels feature plenty of white space, and Parisian shop-fronts that look as if they were made by an Atget who didn't have time to stop and dream. These alternate with full-bleed two-page closeups of lovers and other strangers. The images are at once historical and timeless, though some of the Gill Sans-laid text has dated, with exchanges like, "You dance like an African negress" answered by "I'd like to have a child by a negro."

"Ann" was actually Australian-born dancer/artist Vali Myers, who moved to Paris in 1949 and lived at New York's infamous Chelsea hotel for a while - a few of her paintings in fact still adorn the hotel's storied walls. Myers' drawings are featured throughout the book as well. If Woody Allen's Midnight in Paris transports you to the Paris of the twenties, then the gritty photos and rhythmic page layouts of Love on the Left Bank will transport you to 1956.

Senate confirms Panetta to head Pentagon (AFP)

WASHINGTON (AFP) ? The US Senate unanimously confirmed Leon Panetta's nomination to be defense secretary, hailing his successes as CIA chief just as major challenges await him in Afghanistan and Libya.

All 100 members of the Senate approved the nomination of Panetta, a rare move of unanimity for a federal government official.

The incoming defense chief will have to oversee a troubled war in Afghanistan, the withdrawal of the remaining American troops from Iraq, and US involvement in the NATO-led Libya campaign.

But lawmakers hailed his role in tracking down and eliminating Osama bin Laden, killed in a dramatic US commando raid last month deep in Pakistan.

"The nomination of Leon Panetta to be secretary of defense is a wise and solid one," said Senator Carl Levin, the Democratic chair of the Senate Armed Services Committee.

John McCain, the top Republican on Levin's panel, said that as CIA director, Panetta "has demonstrated he possesses the experience and ability to ensure that we achieve our our objectives in the three conflicts in which US forces are now engaged: Iraq, Afghanistan and Libya."

Panetta, who began his political career as a lawmaker in Congress, becomes the first Democrat to hold the top defense job since William Perry in 1997.

In a break with outgoing Pentagon chief Robert Gates, Panetta, who turns 73 next week, has said he supported the withdrawal of a significant number of troops from Afghanistan next month.

Obama is due to announce Wednesday his plans to withdraw troops from Afghanistan as the military works to put Afghans in charge of their own security by 2014 and wrap up what is now an almost decade-long war.

A senior defense official said on condition of anonymity that the president would "likely" order the withdrawal of about 10,000 troops from Afghanistan this year. Half would come out this summer and half by the end of 2011.

Another 20,000 troops, part of a 30,000 strong surge ordered in December 2009, would be withdrawn by the end of next year, meaning elevated force levels would remain through two more Afghan summer fighting seasons.

Panetta, on track to replace Gates July 1, would thus be in charge of managing the withdrawals, along with other operations in Afghanistan, where the United States currently maintains 99,000 forces.

He would also oversee the US military intervention in Libya against the regime of longtime ruler Moamer Kadhafi, which began in March. Washington has insisted it is only playing a support role under NATO in air raids and intelligence-gathering operations in the north African country.

But the Obama administration is facing growing frustration in Congress, where lawmakers are furious they were not consulted before the operations were launched just as the intervention grows increasingly unpopular among a war-weary US public.

Beyond Afghanistan and Libya, Panetta will also be charged with reining in the Pentagon's massive spending now being debated in Congress amid record US deficit and debt.

"In this time of tight budgets, he knows how to do more with less," said Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid. "He has the experience to make high-stakes decisions on matters vital to our national security especially."

Levin pointed to the "enormous responsibilities" now before Panetta, while expressing confidence that the man who once served as president Bill Clinton's budget chief was up to the job.

How to Fix the Dire Housing Numbers (Time.com)

Time for more housing stimulus. The question is how.

According to numbers released today by the National Association of Realtors, home sales fell 3.8% in May. They were down 15% from a year ago. Home prices were down as well, 5% lower than a year ago. And while 4% might not sound like a big drop for sales, for this time of year it is. May and June are typically prime home buying months. Most people like to move in during the summer so they can have their kids in by the school year. Plus houses just look better in the Spring. So these two month typically dictate how well the housing market will do all year. And if that is the case, the housing market is going to be pretty bad for a while. The number of homes sold in the U.S. in the month, about 450,000, was only slightly better than what home sales were two years, which was the worst May on record.

Perhaps a worse sign for recovery is that first time home buyers are exiting the real estate market faster than other buyers. And again this is particularly bad news in May, when people looking for their first house typically make up a larger share of the home market.? A year ago, first-time home buyers made up 46% of the housing market. A year before that it was 47%. Last month, first time home buyers accounted for only 35% of the market. Yes, there were tax credits last year, but those credits were for everyone not just first time home buyers. And historically, first time home buyers have made up about 40% of the housing market.

The question is what to do about the housing market. The knee jerk reaction would be that we need to bring back the home buyer tax credit. But some economists say that's not the answer.

Senior economist Celia Chen at Moody's Analytics thinks reinstating the home buyer tax credit, which allowed buyers to get $8,000 off their income taxes when they bought a home, probably won't do much to boost home sales or prices. That's because we have already had two rounds of that stimulus program. And she thinks everyone who wanted to take advantage of the housing credit probably did. But there is another reason bringing back the housing tax credit might not work. Credits like these can increase demand because people believe they are temporary. Once you keep bringing them back that no longer is the case. So it all gets built into the price. No reason to buy now because if you don't and all your friends don't, and all their friends don't, then the government is likely to bring back the tax credit anyway.

Here are three things the government could do to boost the housing market:

1) Help people keep their homes. Throughout the housing crisis, one of the government's biggest failures has been foreclosure mitigation. And the rising number of foreclosures has been one of the biggest drags on the housing market. Even if people aren't losing their homes today, most buyers know that there will be more homes at lower prices coming on the market so. So why would anyone buy. If we could reduce the number of foreclosures, home sales might start to go up again. Right now, pretty much everyone has concluded the government's efforts so far have been subpar. Just announcing a new program might been enough to boost confidence in the housing market, and stabilize prices.

2) Force banks to fix their foreclosure problems. Housing market economist Thomas Lawler did an interesting study recently. He looked at two housing markets in the metro D.C. that were pretty similar, expect for the fact that in one county prices were rising again, and in the other home values were still falling. What was the determining factor? Foreclosures. In the market that had recovered, banks had had an easier time foreclosing. That cleared the market of homes being sold at depressed prices. In the other market, where people are stuck in foreclosure limbo, prices continue to fall. Having people kicked out of their house is not the optimal solution. But forcing the banks to either modify loans or get on with the foreclosure seems to be the best medicine for the housing market.

3) More Jobs Market Stimulus. The biggest factor that boosts the housing market is more jobs. People buy houses when they are employed. They don't when they are collecting unemployment checks. So the best way to stimulate the housing market is to start with the jobs market. In today's Wall Street Journal, Princeton economist Alan Blinder says his favorite idea to boost the economy is for tax credits for companies that add workers to their payrolls.
