Knights focus on semi-final football

IN-form Knights centre Dane Gagai admitted this morning that semi-final football is now on the minds of his Newcastle teammates.

Yesterday?s 36-6 victory over the Raiders at Canberra Stadium, the Knights? fifth in their past six matches, propelled them to the doorstep of the NRL top eight.

Gold Coast, Knights, Wests Tigers and St George-Illawarra are all log-jammed on 22 points, with the Titans hanging precariously onto eighth spot from Newcastle due to a superior points differential on just two.

??It?s always going to be in your mind to get in the top eight and you always want to be playing in the finals and not sitting back watching it at home,?? Gagai said at the team?s recovery session this morning.

??It does come up in your mind a bit, but our main goal is to take it week by week and just try to win every game from here and the Bulldogs is going to be our next challenge.??

The Knights? resurgence will face their toughest challenge yet on Saturday night when they host the competition-leading Canterbury Bulldogs at Hunter Stadium.

Canterbury are on a nine-game winning streak and are favourites to win the premiership.

Gagai will face his own personal challenge as we will likely mark NSW Origin centre Josh Morris.

??He?s a good player, but I?ve got quality guys marking inside me in [Knights five-eighth Jarrod] Mullen so I trust the inside man and he?ll help me out a lot there,?? he said.

??I?ve come up against some pretty good centres, so hopefully that will help me out a lot going into the game.??

Community outreach essential to stop poaching and recover wildlife

By Robert Steinmetz, Conservation Biologist, WWF Thailand

In Southeast Asia, iconic wildlife species such as tigers and elephants survive in tenuously small populations surrounded by villages, agriculture and roads. Tigers, in particular, face a menacing combination of threats ? direct poaching for their body parts, which are sold internationally as medicine and decorations, and poaching of their prey, like the sambar, barking deer, gaur and wild pig, that tigers depend on for survival and reproduction.

Wildlife poaching, especially of large mammals, has reached critical levels in Thailand and throughout Asia, resulting in forests that are nearly empty of animals.?

Controlling poaching

Tackling poaching requires professionally managed protected areas and often, high levels of ranger patrolling. But park rangers are usually outnumbered by local people living in the surrounding areas. If parks fail to gain the help of local people in the fight against poaching, then the continued efforts of the poachers will overwhelm even the best-trained, motivated rangers who are at the frontline protecting tigers.

But if society actively supports conservation efforts, then rangers would be part of a broad alliance that outnumber the poachers. Engaging society in conservation is crucial for lasting and effective conservation.

In 2008, WWF Thailand and Kuiburi National Park in southern Thailand?s Prachuap Khiri Khan Province, began an experimental project to reduce poaching by enlisting the support of surrounding communities. Conducted jointly with Thailand?s Department of National Parks, Wildlife and Plant Conservation, the project?s main goal was the recovery of tiger prey. Until then, tiger prey population had been poached to such scarcity that tigers were on the verge of extinction.

Under the project, a long-term outreach and education campaign was organised, reaching out to three strata of local village society ? adult villagers, children, and local leaders and government officials ? that could help stem the tide of poaching.

Motivating people to support conservation

Increased awareness of the plight of wildlife, its role in maintaining healthy ecosystems, and the immorality of driving another species to extinction, must surely be a prerequisite to action. Therefore, as a first step, the project sought to raise awareness, increase knowledge, shift attitudes, and build compassion for wildlife.

Outreach events were organized at village meetings, schools, markets, temple fairs, youth camps, government meetings, and in the forest itself. A tiger mascot joined some events, which were educational and fun, with slide shows, games, music and discussions.

In 2009 a Wildlife Recovery Network of 11 schools was initiated, and teachers have implemented a local curriculum focused on wildlife recovery issues. Altogether over 100 outreach events had been conducted since 2008 when the experiment started, directly reaching out to more than 7,000 people.

Incentives for changing behaviour
But awareness and knowledge are not enough. People also need incentives to change behaviour. Outreach emphasized the role of wildlife in maintaining healthy forests and watersheds which local people ultimately depend on. Also, the project?s school outreach urged students to share their concern about what they had learned with their parents. This then creates an incentive for parents to shift behaviour in favour of conservation.

But still more is needed. People need choices, and solutions to act on. At every outreach event people were proposed three simple actions they could voluntarily undertake. These were, in increasing order of difficulty: (1) spread the word about the precarious state of Kuiburi?s wildlife; (2) reconsider hunting, eating or buying wildlife; and (3) reject outside poachers by alerting the park to poacher incursions.

Poachers themselves were not expected to participate in outreach events, but it was expected they would be influenced indirectly, by encouraging new social norms in society that constrained poachers. People often respond to society?s expectations ? if neighbours and children of poachers no longer tolerated poaching, many poachers might think twice.

Poaching declined, wildlife increased

To evaluate the effects of outreach, poaching pressure and wildlife population trends were monitored. Since 2008, poaching pressure has declined every year; ranger patrols found four times fewer poaching signs, such as shotgun shells and hunting camps, in 2011 than in earlier years. A questionnaire survey indicated that the main driver of this decline in poaching pressure was increased awareness from park outreach.

Wildlife responded to the increased freedom from persecution. Camera trap and sign surveys indicated that distributions of gaur, sambar, wild pig and muntjac ? the main prey of tigers ? more than doubled.

The experience at Kuiburi clearly demonstrates that when local communities are well-engaged and mobilized, through outreach and partnerships, they can be a very powerful force against poaching.

Engadget-CyanogenMod 10 preview build now available for Verizon's Galaxy Nexus

Engadget ? We know it didn't take much time for the Tenth iteration of that CM greatness to reach Google's popular Nexus 7 and Samsung's most colossal Galaxy handset on the block, but one other Android big shot was still yet to join the "preview build" bash. The marvelous news is Verizon Galaxy Nexus owners can now also take part in the early adoption process, as CyanogenMod's Brint Kriebel has said via Mountain View's social network that CM10 for Big Red's GNex is out and up for grabs. That said, he's let it be known the goods aren't exactly fully baked, though he has been rockin' it as his "daily driver" for about two weeks -- which, needless to say, is quite a good sign. BoatUS Report ? Captain Ken Kreisler's Boat and Yacht Report

Twice in the last month, SPOT Assist Maritime service with BoatUS Towing Services?has proven invaluable for a couple of offshore anglers with disabled fishing vessels far out in the Gulf of Mexico. SPOT combines satellite messaging communications and GPS technology with the nation?s largest fleet of towboats?for recreational boaters. By enrolling in SPOT Assist Maritime and pressing?the non-emergency ?Help??button on their handheld SPOT Satellite GPS Messengers, each angler was able to summon TowBoatUS assistance and safely return to shore.

Having SPOT Assist Maritime service aboard your boat brings peace of mind. If a motor breaks down or you run out of gas, BoatUS?Towing Services can be summoned by pressing your SPOT unit.

In the first case, which occurred in the early hours of July 4th, Capt. Lee Eckler?of TowBoatUS?Tarpon Springs, FL, received a dispatch from the BoatUS?24-hour call center indicating a mariner was summoning towboat?assistance from a location 25 miles offshore of Anclote?Key ? far beyond cell phone range. With the SPOT and BoatUS?partnership, Capt. Eckler?was immediately provided with precise GPS coordinates as well as name, contact information, type and color of boat, which was identified?as a 17-foot center console. Upon arrival on scene, he found three anglers with a dead engine ?loaded for fishing,? said Eckler.

Alone on the water, there were no Good Samaritans for miles around. Incredulously, Eckler?learned the trio had broken down long before reaching their desired destination ? a fishing spot some 60 miles out in the Gulf. ?It was a textbook SPOT dispatch case. We knew exactly were they were, which greatly speeded response times,? said Eckler.

In the second case, an angler requested towboat?assistance in the early morning hours of July 12th after his 30-foot power catamaran became disabled approximately 52 miles offshore of Tarpon Springs, FL. As with all SPOT cases, especially when contact via cell phone and VHF cannot be made, BoatUS?call center dispatchers also notified the US Coast Guard, which elected to dispatch a helicopter and response boat to verify everyone onboard was safe. Capt. George ?Red? Ingram, also of TowBoatUS Tarpon Springs, responded to the disabled vessel and towed it safely back to the owner?s dock by the early afternoon. A broken lower unit was the source of the angler?s troubles.

?When VHF and cell phones were unavailable, the SPOT satellite-based service was able to summon a towboat?for non-emergency assistance miles offshore,? said BoatUS?Towing Services Vice President Jerry Cardarelli. ?That?s a valuable communications tool to add to any boater?s toolbox.?

BoatUS Towing Services offers towing plans for freshwater lakes and rivers for just $34 annually and just $125 for saltwater, plus BoatUS or BoatUS Angler?membership of $24. SPOT units start at $99.99 plus a $99.99 annual basic SPOT service plan. To add SPOT Assist Maritime to a BoatUS membership, there is a one-time $10 SPOT Link connection fee. SPOT Assist for Maritime is available throughout the continental US as well as coastal British Columbia and select regions of Northern Mexico and the Bahamas.

BoatUS?strongly recommends boaters have a properly registered and GPS enabled DSC-VHF?radio aboard to be?able to hail the closest potential rescuers ? fellow boaters and the US Coast Guard ? in an emergency. For offshore passages, BoatUS?also recommends having an EPIRB (Emergency Position Indicating Radio Beacon). For more information on SPOT Assist Maritime, visit www.findmespot.com/assist

About?BoatUS Towing Services:?Boat Owners Association of The United States (BoatUS) is the nation?s leading advocate for recreational boaters providing over half a million members with a wide array of consumer services, including on-the-water towing assistance provided by TowBoatUS and Vessel Assist. Combined, these two towing fleets offer boaters, anglers and sailors the world?s largest network of towing ports with over 300 locations and over 600 towing assistance vessels ? three times larger than the closest competitor.

Singing the Blues: August Will Be a Blue Moon Month

The month of August brings us not one, but two full moons. The first will kick off the month on Wednesday (Aug.1), and will be followed by a second on Aug. 31.

Some almanacs and calendars assert that when two full moons occur within a calendar month, the second full moon is called a "blue moon."

The full moon that night will likely look no different than any other full moon. But the moon can change color in certain conditions.?

After forest fires or volcanic eruptions, the moon can appear to take on a bluish or even lavender hue.? Soot and ash particles, deposited high in the Earth's atmosphere, can sometimes make the moon appear bluish. Smoke from widespread forest fire activity in western Canada created a blue moon across eastern North America in late September 1950. In the aftermath of the massive eruption of Mount Pinatubo in the Philippines in June 1991 there were reports of blue moons (and even blue suns) worldwide. [Infographic: Blue Moons Explained]

Origin of the term

The phrase "once in a blue moon" was first noted in 1824 and refers to occurrences that are uncommon, though not truly rare. Yet, to have two full moons in the same month is not as uncommon as one might think.? In fact, it occurs, on average, about every 2.66 years.? And in the year 1999, it occurred twice in a span of just three months.?

For the longest time no one seemed to have a clue as to where the "blue moon rule" originated.? Many years ago in the pages of Natural History magazine, I speculated that the rule might have evolved out of the fact that the word "belewe" came from the Old English, meaning, "to betray."? "Perhaps," I suggested, "the second full Moon is 'belewe' because it betrays the usual perception of one full moon per month."?

But as innovative as my explanation was, it turned out to be completely wrong.

More mistakes

It was not until that "double blue moon year" of 1999 that the origin of the calendrical term "blue moon" was at long last discovered.? It was during the time frame from 1932 through 1957 that the Maine Farmers' Almanac suggested that if one of the four seasons (winter, spring, summer or fall) contained four full moons instead of the usual three, that the third full moon should be called a blue moon.?

But thanks to a couple of misinterpretations of this cryptic definition, first by a writer in a 1946 issue of Sky & Telescope magazine, and much later, in 1980 in a syndicated radio program, it now appears that the second full moon in a month is the one that's now popularly accepted as the definition of a blue moon.????

This time around, the moon will turn full on Aug. 31 at 9:58 a.m. Eastern Daylight Time (6:58 a.m. Pacific Standard Time), making it a blue moon.

However, there is an exception: for those living in the Kamchatka region of the Russian Far East as well as in New Zealand, that same full moon occurs after midnight, on the calendar date of Sept. 1. So in these regions of world, this will not be the second of two full moons in August, but the first of two full moons in September. So, if (for example) you reside in Petropavlovsk-Kamchatsky or Christchurch, you'll have to wait until September 30 to declare that the moon is "officially" blue.

Blue Moon/New Moon

While we've assigned the name blue moon to the second full moon of the month, it seems that we have no such name for the second new moon of the month.? Nonetheless, these opposing phases seem to be connected with each other. For if two new moons occur within a specific month, then in most cases, four years later, two full moons will also occur in that very same month.?

As an example, there were two new moons in August 2008. Now, four years later, August 2012 will be graced with two full moons.

The next time we will see two full moons in a single month comes in July 2015 (July 1 and 31). But if you still have a calendar leftover from last year, check the month of July.?

You'll find that there were two new moons on the 1st and the 30th.

Portable Vehicle Outlining Companies and Web Business Index ...

Their organization is listed by many mobile auto detailers on a single or two online business index promotion websites, similar to the online orange site web sites. This is sensible in lots of regards for such a business model, especially if the sense is searched by city and zip code. This increases the chances of the little mobile auto detailing company of coming up on the customers display if they do local pursuit of such services. Most auto detailing businesses have only 5-10 pages on their sites and therefore can not get the higher rankings of an Business Directory Advertising website. My company never used such methods to promote since we build our routes block by block and don?t need onesy twosee client contact ins disrupting already effective routes. But this really is not to say that such sites do not work, just that our company focuses on mobile cleansing not outlining and we have typical assigned channels (the Car Wash Guys ).Occasionally we?ve seen some competitors use these kind of sites for misdirection and list their company in lots of places, which they do not support to get the calls, which may normally go to competitors. This is somewhat unfortunate because it confuses consumers and provides a challenging situation for of distrust of Internet Surfers such directories for the long run. So often the information is incorrect and something to consider when selecting the proper Online Internet Business Directory Website which is best for you.You also needs to know that usually these Online Internet Business Directory Website methods are just good if they rank high and normally have ranking fallouts over time and don?t get used as much, too many of them crap up the Internet and there is a great deal of competition between them. It is smart to see which web sites show up first on the most likely searches your client might do and browse around. More organizations in the South use them and the bay region then elsewhere. For specific business types they are a good idea and makes sense and $15.00 per quarter to be outlined makes sense for these types of companies. If you possess a cellular automobile explaining business think with this in 2006.

Nokia dismisses Moody's downgrade

(AP) ? Nokia says it is "disappointed" that Moody's has downgraded the company's long-term senior unsecured debt ratings to Ba3 from Ba1.

The rating agency said Monday that the change was prompted by its view that Nokia's smartphone business could post bigger operating losses, while draining the company of cash, during the transition to the new Windows Phone 8 operating software this year.

Nokia said the impact of the downgrading would have a limited impact, and pledged to keep cutting costs and protecting its financial position.

The downgrade is Moody's third on Nokia since April.

Syrian forces bombard Damascus, fight rages in Aleppo

BEIRUT/AMMAN (Reuters) - Syrian forces bombarded three districts of Damascus with helicopter gunships on Sunday, witnesses said, clawing back territory from rebels a week after the fighters launched what they called a final battle for the capital.

Fighting also raged around the main intelligence headquarters in Syria's biggest city, Aleppo -- the country's main commercial and industrial hub -- and in Deir al-Zor on the Euprhates river, the largest city in the east.

Rebels said they had captured a third border crossing with Turkey on Sunday, Bab al-Salam north of Aleppo, while Iraqi officials said Syrian forces had regained control of one of two border crossings seized by rebels on the frontier with Iraq.

The helicopter bombardments in Damascus and Deir al-Zor showed President Bashar al-Assad's determination to regain control after a bomb killed four members of his high command in the gravest blow in the 16-month-old revolt.

Rebels were driven from Mezze, the diplomatic district of Damascus, residents and opposition activists said, and elite Fourth Division troops were besieging the northern neighborhood of Barzeh, one of three northern areas hit by helicopter fire.

The fourth division is run by Assad's younger brother, Maher al-Assad, 41, who is widely seen as the muscle maintaining the Assad family's four decades of Alawite minority rule.

His role has become more crucial since Assad's defense and intelligence ministers, a top general and his powerful brother-in-law were killed by the bomb on Wednesday, part of a "Damascus volcano" by rebels seeking to turn the tables in a revolt inspired by Arab Spring uprisings in Tunisia, Libya and Egypt.

Assad has not spoken in public since the bombing. Diplomats and opposition sources said government forces were focusing on strategic centers, with one Western diplomat comparing Assad to a doctor "abandoning the patient's limbs to save the organs".

Syrian state television quoted a media source denying that helicopters had fired on the capital. "The situation in Damascus is normal, but the security forces are pursuing the remnants of the terrorists in some streets," it said.

Assad's forces, who also pushed into a rebel-held district in the northerly commercial hub of Aleppo on Saturday, targeted pockets of lightly armed rebels, who moved about the streets on foot and attacked security installations and roadblocks.

Residents said the sound of shelling in the capital was so intense at dusk that they were unable to distinguish it from the traditional cannon blast marking the end of the daily fast for the Muslim holy month of Ramadan.

Opposition activists said late on Saturday that helicopters had fired rockets into a neighborhood near the southerly Sayida Zeinab district, causing dozens of casualties. They did not have any other details.

"In Damascus, people continue to search desperately for safety," the International Committee of the Red Cross (ICRC) said in a statement in Geneva.

"Humanitarian needs are growing as the situation in the city worsens and as large numbers of people flee their neighborhoods in search of safe haven. The ICRC and the Syrian Arab Red Crescent have intensified their response to the situation."

The Syrian Observatory for Human Rights, an opposition group that monitors the violence, said 180 people, including 48 troops, had been killed across Syria on Saturday. Many of them died in the province of Homs, epicenter of the uprising.

Most shops in Damascus were closed and there was only light traffic - although more than in the past few days. Some police checkpoints, abandoned earlier in the week, were manned again.

Many petrol stations were closed, having run out of fuel, and those that were open had huge lines of cars waiting to fill up. Residents reported long queues at bakeries.

FLIGHT FROM ALEPPO

A bloody crackdown on what began as a peaceful revolt has increasingly become an armed conflict between an establishment dominated by Assad's Alawite minority, an offshoot of Shi'ite Islam, and rebels drawn largely from the Sunni majority.

U.N. Secretary General Ban Ki-moon said he was sending his peacekeeping chief Herve Ladsous and top military adviser General Babacar Gaye to Syria to assess the situation.

Opposition activists in Aleppo said hundreds of families were fleeing residential areas on Saturday after the military swept into the Saladin district, which had been in rebel hands for two days.

Fighting was also reported in the densely-populated, poor neighborhood of al-Sakhour.

"The sound of bombardment has been non-stop since last night. For the first time we feel Aleppo has turned into a battle zone," a housewife, who declined to be named, said by phone from the city.

REBEL BORDER CROSSING RAID

On the Iraqi-Syrian border, Iraqi security and border officials said Syrian forces had reasserted control over the Yarubiya crossing point on the Syrian side of the frontier, briefly seized by rebels on Saturday.

Syrian opposition activists said several towns in Syria's Kurdish northeast had passed - without a fight - into local hands in recent days as central authority eroded.

The surge in violence has trapped millions of Syrians, turned sections of Damascus into ghost areas, and sent tens of thousands of refugees fleeing to neighboring Lebanon.

The U.N. Security Council has approved a 30-day extension for a ceasefire observer mission, but Ban has recommended changing its focus to pursuing prospects for a political solution - effectively accepting there is no truce to monitor.

Diplomats said only half of the 300 unarmed observers would be needed for Ban's suggested plan, and several monitors were seen departing from Damascus on Saturday.

Speaking two days after Russia and China vetoed a resolution to impose U.N. sanctions on Assad's government, Ban called on he Security Council to "redouble efforts to forge a united way forward and exercise its collective responsibility".

"The Syrian government has manifestly failed to protect civilians and the international community has collective responsibility to live up to the U.N. Charter and act on its principles," he said.

Regional and Western powers have voiced concern the conflict might become a full-blown sectarian war that could spill across borders. But Assad's opponents remain outgunned and divided.

French Foreign Minister Laurent Fabius, speaking after contacts with the head of the Arab League and Qatar's prime minister, said all three agreed that it was time for Syria's fractured opposition to prepare to take charge of the country.

"We would like to see the rapid formation of a provisional government representing the diversity of Syrian society," said Fabius. Syria's main political opposition group, the Syrian National Council, operating in exile, has so far failed to unite Assad's disparate foes on a united political platform.

Investment Mastery: Master It With Marcus De Maria ? SharesInv.com

Surprised that we are still harping on the Eurozone crisis? Or are you thinking out loud, when will there ever be a time where the markets are not that volatile? Well respected stock market and wealth educator Marcus De Maria is seeking to help filter your lenses to find opportunities despite these conditions. Having turned his life around with a formula for financial wealth, Marcus has helped many others turn around their lives and become financialyl independent.

Other than having appeared on BBC TV?s The Money series (How To Be A Millionare, 2011), Marcus is also the author of the book, ?Wealth Workout ? The Simple Seven Step Formula For Financial Success and the contributor to leading money, finance, stock market and property publications in UK.

In an exclusive interview with Shares Investment, we tap on Marcus? invaluable insights on the realms of investments and what investors can do to re-evaluate their current trading or investment patterns. His comments are as follow:

Shares Investment: Brent crude oil has rolled down from a high price of above US$125 in Mar-12 to below US$100. What is your view on the black gold?

Marcus De Maria: I remember when it was up above US$140?s in 2007/2008 and my team were day trading with massive volatility until it went all the way down to the US$30s again. That was a wild ride. So can this happen again? I don?t believe so this time. My view is that for the first time in a long while, I started buying into it a few days ago ? I might be a little early, but I don?t want to miss the move up when it happens.

SI: Both gold and silver had their prices peaked in Aug- 11. What is your take on the two precious metals? Which, in your opinion, offers more opportunities?

Marcus: I tend to concentrate more on silver than gold because silver is more volatile, which allows many more entry points and exit points. So I tend to enter around US$36 and exit with a quick 10% but have the majority of my silver allocation in more medium term plays. The chart does look bearish at the moment though, so I have not added to my position.

SI: Platinum has historically traded above gold. However, this long-known trend has reversed in recent times. Is this pattern sustainable?

Marcus: Yes for the first time in 20 years platinum is priced below gold. But does this mean that gold is overvalued or platinum is undervalued? As we know, gold is a play on currencies being devalued. China is slowing down due to a lessening of global demand for its products. So in the short term platinum might stay low, but for the medium to long term I like its chances. I have recently bought some for my children?s pension.

SI: What do you expect stock market conditions to be like in the second half of 2012? In particular, what is your outlook for Asian markets? What should traders look out for?

Marcus: I love that question ? However, I don?t have a crystal ball. All I can do as a trader is to trade what I see. I believe that you should have a strategy and stick with it, not try to second guess the market. I believe that you should look for what I have named, ?Precious Resources? ? an asset which a growing number of people need but which is getting used up. Gold isn?t getting used up, 99% of the gold that has been mined is still in circulation. But silver, platinum and palladium are all used up in a variety of applications, so you have to like their chances in the long term. And of course oil.

I am really excited about the Asian markets. That is why we are setting up a training and trading centre in Singapore and Malaysia with our friends, Success Resources.

SI: What advice do you have for someone who is new to trading? For a novice, which are the markets he/she should start with?

Marcus: If you are new, I would actually recommend that you invest medium term. Timing the market for a newbie is a big thing to ask. But they can make good money if they spent more time catching up with the market. I have two daughters, and I am slowly building up a position for them in Precious Resources over time.

The strategy is simple ? allocate a certain amount of money every month to two-three Precious Resources. In a month when the price goes up compared to last month, invest a little less, if it goes down compared to last month, invest a little bit more. This is my twist on an improved Dollar Cost Averaging, which I have named, Value Cost Averaging. You don?t have to think too hard and you will outperform the market over time that way.

SI: What are the common pitfalls that most traders experience in their journey? For those who intend to become professional traders, what advice do you have?

Marcus: I believe that not everyone can make it as a successful trader. If I were to start again I wouldn?t trade by myself, I would have a trading buddy to force me to follow the rules every time. This is the only way to see if the system is working or not. More often than not the system is working but the trader isn?t working because they don?t follow the rules. They get excited by the market action and try something out ? it rarely works.

Rather than day-trading, I would start with a system that does not rely on the market being open, so there is no excuse for the emotions to get hold of you, like an end of day strategy.

Also ? and this is not the case for investing ? but if you are trading ALWAYS use a stop loss. If you are not using one as a novice trader, you should stop right now and do something else.

SI: Your journey to financial independence is awe-inspiring. Before setting up Investment Mastery (your very own wealth creation and education company), you had actually attended many seminars. In what ways are Investment Mastery different to the other seminars?

Marcus: Thank you but all I did was applying principles I learned from people like Anthony Robbins around my mindset, rather than the skill-set. Interestingly these were seminars, which is fine for mindset but I am not convinced you can learn enough to be able to trade during a seminar. There are too many people and precious little chance of getting your questions answered, no practice and crucially, no follow up support.

At Investment Mastery we have turned it on its head and run workshops not seminars. Everyone has a laptop, we practice placing trades, we spend a lot of time getting people prepared to make money and then we follow up with you immediately the next day. We have one hour coaching calls every week with our traders live where you can get all your questions answered.

It?s a lot of work for us but our graduates appreciate it because let?s face it, the follow up support is probably as important as the workshop itself!

For investors who would like to get a first-hand experience on wealth management and how to master your investments, you can head down to wealth expo, where Marcus will be speaking about the mastery of oil, silver and shares investment. (For more information, please visit http://www.nacsingapore.

Amazon.com (AMZN) has forever transformed consumers' shopping habits and helped to hasten the growth in online retail. But there was always one area that thwarted Amazon's reach: immediate gratification. Same-day shipping has been the bane of Amazon's existence and the single leverage brick-and-mortar retailers held over its online challenger. But Amazon may start offering same-day delivery as soon as next year, according to various reports, which could further alter the retail landscape.

Amazon has not confirmed the rumors but retail insiders believe it's an inevitable move for the online retail giant. The Seattle-based company has been planning to add new distribution centers across the U.S. in states such as New Jersey, Texas, California, Virginia and Indiana and these new warehouses will be able to ship online purchases to consumers living in that state within hours. Same-day shipping by Amazon would be another blow to brick-and-mortar retail stores already battling the phenomenon of "showrooming," an industry term for when customers examine products in person but buy the same goods online, often at a lower cost.

Wendy Liebmann, CEO and Chief Shopper at WSL/Strategic Retail, says Amazon's same-day shipping is "Amazon's way of becoming more and more ubiquitous" and gives consumers another reason not to go to physical stores. But mom-and-pop "stores aren't going away anytime soon," she says. "Eighty to 85 percent of shopping and spending will still be done in physical stores."

This development could have significant consequences for Walmart (WMT), Liebmann says in the attached clip. Walmart, the largest retailer in the world and the nation's biggest food retailer, has seen its customer base decline in recent years as more of its consumers shop at Amazon. More Amazon distribution centers suggest that Amazon is trying to compete in the food industry space, posing a direct challenge to Walmart, she adds.

Amazon created "AmazonFresh" ? a home grocery delivery service ? for its Seattle customers, which allows shoppers to purchase food, organic produce, meat, fish and bakery goods on its site for same-day delivery. That model could quickly become a norm for the states opening new Amazon facilities.

Amazon may be encroaching on big box retailers turf by introducing same-day delivery but the playing field is also moving in favor of big box retailers. A new study conducted by retail research firm Kantar Retail determined that Walmart offers lower prices on a wide range of products over Amazon. Prices at Amazon were on average 20 percent higher than at Walmart stores and Walmart's online retail site. Walmart's food prices were nearly 60 percent cheaper compared to Amazon. The study analyzed prices in April.

Moreover, Amazon will start collecting state sales tax in the states where it's building facilities in addition to the six states where it currently collects. Amazon has resisted collecting tax for years but is coming under increased pressure at both the state and federal level to do so.

Collecting tax means price increases for Amazon consumers, but Amazon still maintains its convenience advantage Liebmann notes.

Heat, drought make for more flavorful produce

(AP) ? Chef Dan Jacobs expected his recent batch of jalape?o poppers to be tame because peppers grown at this time of the year are generally mild. But he quickly discovered that his spicy appetizer carried an unexpected fire.

"Wow, those things are no joke. They are hot," said Jacobs, the top chef at Roots Restaurant and Cellar in Milwaukee. "At this time of year, they shouldn't be this hot. But the warm weather, the no rain, that's going to cause that."

Temperatures above 100 degrees and droughtlike conditions have baked parts of the upper Midwest for weeks, taking a severe toll on corn and soybeans. But the heat brought an expected benefit for peppers and other crops: Their flavors became unusually concentrated, producing some of the most potent-tasting produce in years.

In peppers, that means the difference between a lightly tingling tongue and heavily watery eyes. The effect comes from alkaloids, the substance that binds to heat receptors on the tongue.

"Peppers really like hot weather," said Irwin Goldman, a horticulture professor at the University of Wisconsin-Madison. "When it's dry and hot outside, you'll get a higher concentration of alkaloids."

The same phenomenon also happens in onions, garlic and certain fruits, he said.

Scientists say a pepper's hotness is generally determined by genetics, although environment can play a role. Long hot days cause peppers to produce more capsaicin, the specific alkaloid that delivers the spicy kick.

The absence of water also has an effect. The higher a vegetable's water content, the larger and juicier it is, but the more diluted the flavor.

Farmers say they've noticed a taste difference in several of their crops over the past month or so. Cindy Chapman, who raises corn, beets and other vegetables, said she noticed that the radishes she harvested earlier in the year were especially flavorful.

"They were much hotter, really sharp," said Chapman, a farmer in East Troy. "Some people won't eat them when they're that sharp, and then there are other people who love the stronger flavor."

This kind of weather can also cause melons to be especially sweet, said Jim Nienhuis, who also teaches horticulture at UW-Madison. Cantaloupes originated in the Middle East, and watermelons came from the deserts of Africa, so they've been thriving.

"Hot, dry conditions result in higher rates of photosynthesis, leading to higher concentrations of fruit sugars," he said in an email.

Bruce Sherman, executive chef at the North Pond Restaurant in Chicago, has noticed. His restaurant gets its fruits and vegetables from farms in Illinois, Indiana, Michigan and Wisconsin, and his recent batches of cantaloupes and cucumbers have been exceptionally sweet.

Sherman said he might use cantaloupe in a melon gazpacho or a cucumber-melon-corn salad.

"We might not dress it as heavily if the integral flavor is better by itself," he said.

He said he hadn't gotten any unusually spicy peppers yet, although one supplier told him that her jalape?os and Serrano peppers were twice as hot as usual.

While fruits and vegetables with lower water concentrations can have a sharpened taste, they'll also generally be less juicy. David Witte, a West Bend farmer, said that could be good or bad.

"One person might like that there's more flavor but less juice, and the person next to him might like a tomato that you cut into and see the juice come out," he said.

The current phenomenon will only last as long as weather in the Midwest remains hot and dry. The heat wave has already moderated in some places, and rain could serve to reduce the flavor concentrations.

Some cooks might take advantage of that brief window to hoard hot peppers for five-alarm chili or extra-spicy salsa. But Jacobs said he didn't plan to offer any special dishes with his fiery jalape?os, grown in Grafton.

If anything, the extra potency means he has to go out of his way to make sure his dishes stay consistent.

"I think we'd just be more careful how we use them in salsa or sauce. We might use one instead of three," he said. "The ones that are super-spicy are no joke. They will rip you apart."
