My time on the Queen Victoria Cruise Ship | Topics Info | Home and ...

I?m now back home after spending the last fortnight on the luxurious Queen Victoria cruise, I had such an enjoyable time that I felt I had to tell you about my experience. I?ve been on a Queen Mary 2 cruise before, and after some thought finally decided to book this ship for 2011. Boarding the ship was fast and easy, we didn?t encounter any problems. It took around ten to fifteen minutes from arriving at the dock to boarding the ship. Once we got on the ship, we found our cabins very quickly as there were plenty of staff around to help people locate their cabins. Our luggage arrived, undamaged, at our stateroom within four hours which we were very pleased with.

Queen Victoria is as elegant as its name would have you imagine. The ship sails calmly across the water and the only thing to match its fine exterior is its even classier exterior. I was overwhelmed at the size of the theatre on the ship, not only was it massive but it had a glorious atmosphere. Throughout the corridors and lounges there were several musicians on hand to elegantly guide us through the ship. To see some pictures from onboard the ship visit website. We opted for the consistently great food of the Britannia restaurant for the majority of our cruise. The food and service here was always exemplary, though paled in comparison to the truly outstanding Verandah resturant. The white glove service was exceptional and the staff were very accomodating.

Oddly enough, I also spent a fair amount of time in the on board library. Prior to booking, I hadn?t imagined myself lending too much of my time to the library, though that quickly changed as I found it to be a very calm and relaxing area. Shore service was very useful, without any problems occurring, everything went plain sailing, as it were.

In summary, I completely loved my time on Queen Victoria and got to see the world in luxurious comfort, I would certainly recomend it to other. Next up, I?m considering booking one of the Regent cruises for 2013.

A Few Ideas For Eco Friendly Home Improvement Projects - Free ...

Today, many people are thinking about ways to live a greener, more environmentally friendly lifestyle, and these principles can definitely be applied to home improvement. You can actually make the comfort and style of your home a lot better by simply using eco friendly methods and they can also save you money on bills. In the following article we will be taking a look at some green ways of improving your home.

One of the least difficult things to do is painting the interior or anterior of your home, and you can concentrate on accomplishing this in an eco-friendly method. You can be positive that you won't be poisoning your surroundings if you use an environmentally friendly paint. There are several types of these paints, including recycled latex, clay based and milk based. Latex recyclable paints are found easily in many different colors and multiple home enhancement stores and hardware stores stock them. You also could be guarding the planet as well as your physical wellbeing because you breathe your home air and the paints that are all natural do not contain conceivably harmful ingredients as the other brands have.

It's certainly worth thinking about the roof on your home when remodeling. Energy efficient metal roofs are worth considering if you're planning on repairing your roof or getting a new one. This is because they can reflect the heat from below, which means the room won't lose heat so you'll save money. Painting your roof white is another option. Doing this will keep your home cooler in the summer because the paint will reflect the heat. You should certainly check that your roof is properly insulated because if it isn't you will be wasting a lot of energy and money.

You can make green home improvements in every room of your house, including your bedroom. The mattress you choose, for example, can be made from natural materials such as organic latex. In that same way, bedding materials can be chosen that are free from chemicals. A harmful chemical to the environment is formaldehyde and numerous typical bed materials contain it. People who are sensitive may notice that they sleep better when their mattress and bedding are all natural. Green choices can also be the healthiest for you and your family. By all means it is possible to create other parts of your room eco-friendly, from the walls to the flooring.

As you make some green improvements to your home you'll see that it really isn't that hard. You'll be able to lower your monthly costs and you will be more independent, so in those ways you will be better off. You may have to make an initial investment for solar panels or insulation though. In the long run you will benefit financially from eco friendly decisions.

How To Finance Med School ? health professions student loan ...

Going to med school is a pretty tough decision. It will eat up your time, challenge your mental abilities and cost you much money. Medical school expenses usually include tuition and many other fees (miscellaneous, laboratory), books (could be hard or softbound), equipment (stethoscope, BP apparatus), day to day expenses (food, transportation, accommodation) and many other costs. If you are going to med school, you have to get all the help that you need.

How do you finance med school?

Choose a med school. There are various med schools you can choose from, and fees can vary. While most of the fees are expensive, many of these schools offer financial aid that you can choose from. This may be subsidized by the government or the school itself. Consider your location, the price and the aid that they can offer. You also have to keep yourself posted for deadlines for applications of financial aids so that you will have a better chance of getting the grant or loan.

Explore different types of financial aid. You have to choose which type of financial aid will suit you. It could be through scholarship grants, loans, or service repayment. Scholarship grants are a form of financial aid that you do not have to repay. You just have to maintain a specific range of grades. Loans are aids that you need to repay. You should evaluate the amount you will loan, the payment terms and the interest rate. These are provided mostly by the government or medical organizations. The government also has a program that encourages banks and lending agencies to give loans to medical students. Service repayment is a program of the government (for example, Health Professions Student Loan Program) that would finance a medical student to throughout the program, with an assurance that the student will work or render service to them for a specific time (i.e. a year or even up to ten years).

Prepare the necessary documents.? Financial aid is not instantly awarded to someone who just asks for it. You must secure the necessary documents needed so that your request for financial aid will be granted. You will be asked about the amount of financial resources that are available in your household, the income and assets of your parents (present current tax returns), and the budget that you are envisioning for the whole school year.

Think again. Even if you already chose a financial aid that can suit you, you have to think again if this is what you really want. You also have to understand fully the terms and conditions that are entailed in your contract with a financial aid program, because once you sign the papers, there is no turning back.

Entering med school is stressful in itself. Seeking for financial helps eases of you these worries, at least for a while, rather than worrying where to get the money to pay up whatever there is to pay for you to be able to continue med school. With the correct planning and strategies, you can finish med school, even with flying colors.

Wall Street sags on new Bernanke talk, Nasdaq off 1 percent (Reuters)

NEW YORK (Reuters) ? Stocks fell on Thursday as new comments from the Federal Reserve chairman dashed investors' hopes for the chance of further stimulus and tech shares pushed the Nasdaq down 1 percent.

During a second day of testimony about the economy, Fed Chairman Ben Bernanke reiterated that the U.S. central bank would be ready to inject more money should the economy get worse. But he told a Senate committee that the time had not come yet and noted inflation had picked up since late 2010.

Stocks had climbed on Wednesday as investors took Bernanke's remarks before a House panel as signaling the possibility of more stimulus for the economy if the outlook worsens. The central bank's most recent stimulative program contributed to strong equity gains since September.

"Bernanke has backed off considerably from what might have been more stimulus, and that made yesterday's rally like eating sugar for lunch: Nothing more than a short burst of energy," said Kent Engelke, chief economic strategist at Capitol Securities Management in Richmond, Virginia.

The market had started off higher on positive JPMorgan results and a report showing new claims for U.S. jobless benefits fell slightly last week, but those gains melted away as Bernanke spoke.

The Dow Jones industrial average (.DJI) was down 64.37 points, or 0.52 percent, at 12,427.24. The Standard & Poor's 500 Index (.SPX) was down 9.99 points, or 0.76 percent, at 1,307.73. The Nasdaq Composite Index (.IXIC) was down 37.65 points, or 1.34 percent, at 2,759.27.

Technology stocks were Thursday's top decliners, continuing their losing streak for a second day. The Merrill Lynch Semiconductor HOLDRS Trust (SMH.P) lost 1.1 percent to $32.52, just below its 200-day moving average.

Google Inc (GOOG.O) shares slipped 1.7 percent to $529.24 ahead of its earnings report after the bell.

JPMorgan Chase & Co (JPM.N) shares rose 2.5 percent to $40.61 after the bank reported a higher-than-expected profit as it wrote off fewer bad mortgages and credit card loans. The Dow component was by far the top gainer in the S&P financial index (.GSPF).

News Corp (NWSA.O) shares fell 2.8 percent to $15.49 on heavy volume after the U.S. Federal Bureau of Investigation said it would probe allegations that the company hacked into the phone records of victims of the September 11, 2011, attacks on the United States.

Worries about a deadlocked debate over U.S. budget cuts and raising the debt ceiling further soured investor sentiment.

In Thursday's appearance before the Senate Banking Committee, Bernanke warned that overzealous cuts to government spending in the short term could derail an already fragile recovery. He also said a U.S. debt default may wreak financial havoc, though equities have generally taken the congressional wranging over the debt ceiling in stride.

"There could be further volatility -- which is code for going down -- as we near the deadline, but the market thinks the debt ceiling will be raised," Engelke said. "If it didn't, we'd be down 5,000 points right now."

Moody's announced late on Wednesday that it might cut the United States' prized triple-A credit rating. Moody's cited the increasing risk that Congress would not raise its $14.3 trillion debt ceiling in time to avert a default, which investors and experts say could roil financial markets.

Marriott International Inc (MAR.N) slumped 6.5 percent to $34.71 a day after giving a tepid full-year outlook.

Astronauts fix second failed computer on shuttle (AP)

CAPE CANAVERAL, Fla. ? The pilots on NASA's last space shuttle flight fixed another one of their main computers Friday after it failed and set off an alarm that shattered their sleep.

NASA declared all five of Atlantis' primary computers to be working, pending evaluation of the latest shutdown.

Computer failures like this are extremely rare in orbit, said lead flight director Kwatsi Alibaruho. The two problems appear to be quite different, he noted. The first was caused by a bad switch throw; the second possibly by cosmic radiation.

"The fact that we did have two computer failures on a same flight on a spacecraft that's otherwise performing beautifully, that's not at all lost on me," Alibaruho told reporters.

"I do have a saying that you're not paranoid if they really are after you, so I am cautiously optimistic that we'll have a healthy data-processing system" for Atlantis' undocking and return to Earth next week, he added. "But we will be watching closely."

Atlantis' commander, Christopher Ferguson, said the alarm sounded an hour or so after the four astronauts had gone to bed, during the deepest part of their sleep.

"We all woke up and looked at one another, and we were wondering really what was going on," he said in an interview with The Associated Press on Friday morning. The astronauts rushed to the flight deck and switched to a backup computer. Within a half-hour they were back in bed.

The first computer failure occurred just before Sunday's docking by Atlantis to the International Space Station. New software loads took care of both problems, at least for now.

The five computers are critical for a space shuttle's return to Earth ? so crucial that multiple shutdowns, in certain circumstances, could prompt an early return home. Atlantis is due to make the last landing of the 30-year space shuttle era next Thursday.

President Barack Obama made note of the historic journey Friday in a call from the Oval Office to space. He thanked everyone at NASA and the "thousands who have poured their hearts and souls into America's shuttle program over the last three decades."

Ferguson told the president that the 10 space travelers will mark the occasion right before the hatches close between the two craft early next week. He will hand over a U.S. flag that flew on the very first shuttle flight in 1981 ? and returned to orbit aboard Atlantis. The flag will remain aboard the outpost until Americans are launched again from U.S. soil by one of the private companies competing to develop a spacecraft to replace the shuttle.

"I understand it's going to be sort of like a capture-the-flag moment here for commercial spaceflight," Obama replied, "so good luck to whoever grabs that flight."

Ferguson said he hopes it happens soon. NASA estimates five years.

On Friday night, the shuttle crew was awakened to "Run the World (Girls)" by Beyonce who also recorded a special message that singled out Sandy Magnus, the last woman shuttle astronaut.

Obama's intent for U.S. space exploration, post shuttle, is to put orbital launches in the hands of private companies, and get NASA working on human expeditions to an asteroid and Mars.

Earlier in the day, Ferguson and his co-pilot, Douglas Hurley, told reporters they're still too busy moving items back and forth between the linked Atlantis and space station to dwell on the looming end of the shuttle program. The shuttle delivered several tons of food, clothes and other household goods for the station; it will return loaded with old station equipment and trash.

The topic came up at Thursday's special all-American dinner of grilled chicken, barbecued beef, baked beans, corn and Hostess apple pie. Ferguson said he told the nine other space fliers, "Hey, you know, this is the last joint meal that we're ever going to have aboard a space shuttle."

"It's a little bit of a sobering, somber moment," Ferguson said. "But at the same time, we're extremely fortunate to have had 37 missions, I think, to the International Space Station now, so we're very lucky to have done this."

Hurley said his most memorable moment of the 13-day mission, so far, was seeing the faces of the two spacewalking astronauts who were outside, just a few feet away, as he operated the robot arm during Tuesday's spacewalk, the last one of the shuttle program.

"It really seemed like it was out of a science fiction movie," he said. "You could see the expression on their faces."

Another highlight for Hurley: an "incredible" aurora australis, or southern lights, on Thursday night.

The shuttle crew got another recorded celebrity call Friday, this time from musician Paul McCartney. The wake-up music was "Good Day Sunshine" by the Beatles.

The Sales Apprentice 2011: Sales Training & Business Development ...

So it was week 11 and Jim was first up to answer the ringing phone which was put down on him when he asked if there was any dress code for the forthcoming task. I mean, seriously, if that?s how Lord Sugar?s PA treats you before you even start working for with him, I?d be checking out the small print.

Tonight?s task was to set up, brand, briefly run and then get assessed on a new fast food shop with the potential to become a chain. Another convoluted task with not enough time to get things done. Was this task about creativity? Was it about branding? Was it about operations? Or was it about product? Well, supposedly it was about all of these things but with barely enough time to boil an egg let alone set up an empire the two teams had little chance to do any of them properly but, despite that, one team massively outperformed the other and produced a decent concept?

Team 1: Jim, Tash and Suzy. Jim started the proceedings with his usual verbal gymnastics, ?If you don?t? mind, I think you?ll agree, I?ll lead this one.? An NLP expert would have a field day. And thus Jim was elected to lead Suzy and Tash into battle against Helen (project manager) and Tom.

Team 2: Helen and Tom. From the off, Helen and Tom worked together well. They allocated roles and bounced off each other with a positive energy.

Jim on the other hand was too busy patronising his team to the camera, ?I?ve got two girls on board who?ll appreciate a bit of direction.? Hmmmm, patronising and maybe even a little sexist Jim. ..

Helen and Tom quickly decided that they were going to create a contemporary British fast food outlet focusing on pies. I travel a lot as a sales motivational speaker and if the business of the Cornish Pasty shacks around the stations in the UK is anything to go by, this should prove to be a good idea. Tom volunteered himself for the creativity and branding side of the business saying that this was what he does and Helen stepped into the breach to sort out the menu and the food. Maybe, finally, we will get to see how Tom fares in an area he considers himself skilled in?

Over on the other team, Tash was shouting her mouth off as usual saying that she had a BA Honours in Hospitality and that she had actually done a project similar to this one in university. She really has to go this week, not least because later on in the board room she claimed that she might have done a hospitality degree but that she did not focus on this area. What???!!)*&^!&)*!

After some debate, Jim?s team team decided to go with a Mexican theme and Jim suggested that they should call it Caracas. He had been thinking of Maracas but got the word wrong so they decided to stick with Caracas anyway, not realising that Caracas is the capital of Venezuela! Clearly, they had not seen an atlas or a globe in their lives? or even Gregory?s Girl. And then, they wrote it as Caraca?s anyway. Who the heck is Caraca? And for a second season on The Apprentice the ?cream? of British ?talent? showed that our education system doesn?t teach the basics as well as it might.

But ?Eats, Shoots & Leaves!? aside, what was Jim doing? He seemed to be running around trying to do everything whilst Suzy and Tash argued. If he was to be measured tonight on his team leading abilities it was a hands down failure. But he needn?t have worried because Tash and Suzy were at each other like a couple of mewling felines arguing about whether they should use a Sombrero or peppers as the ?iconic? image. Yawn!

?I don?t mind someone saying I have another idea. I ?aint got a problem,? pointed out Tash. She clearly did have a problem, as she did last week? and the week before? and the week before that. And will someone please tell her to stop saying, ?Yeah?? And whilst you?re at it, tell her the word is, ?Yes.?

Meanwhile, MyPy was coming together well under the stewardship of Helen and Tom. I was liking this idea and their pies looked good. I?d give them a whirl! Particularly that Northern looking one with the mushy peas in a box! Deciding to give all of their food names they had the idea of using names of great British people. A good idea let down slightly by the fact that they called their mash Columbus Mash, Christopher Columbus unfortunately (for them anyway) hailing from Genoa in Italy.

Sales training tip: Do your research. I?ve said it before and I?ll say it again, research is critical for business success. Research is critical for sales success. Research is critical if you want to become a sales superstar.

?It?s either utter madness or it?s complete genius,? mused Tom. I thought Dave Gorman might well pronounce it ?Genius? but I wasn?t sure and that about sums Tom up? If he is what he might be then he looks like a contender but how do we know if his inventions are more Apple IPhone or more Sinclair C5? I guess we?ll find out next week, eh?

Back on team Jim, Tash and Suzy were notable mostly because of their conspicuous absences and even as the hired help cut up salad in the kitchen Jim was scooting around the place whilst they seemed to be seriously under-employed.

Sales leadership tip: Sales leadership isn?t about fast talking. Sales leadership isn?t about superlatively crafted lines. Sales leadership isn?t about hot air.

Sales leadership is about inspiring and guiding your teams. Sales leadership is about getting the best out of your teams. Sales leadership is about communication, direction and strategy.

And Jim wasn?t achieving against any of these measures. And after their trial run to 100 customers saw ?fast food? coming out served by snails, Suzy was quick to hand yet another ?monkey? (read Ken Blanchard?s ?The One Minute Manager Meets The Monkey?) to Jim by telling him that he had to make sure that their food was hot. Jim popped it in the cage with the rest of the monkeys he was caring for and Suzy wandered off? presumably to read the paper and put her feet up. A busy week compared to sleeping on the job when selling last week!

By contrast, Helen and Tom?s trial went well apart from their ridiculous opening question to their guests of, ?Have you ever eaten 100% British before?? ?Err,? yes thanks,? would have been my reply.

Sales training tip: Don?t try to be too clever. Engaging customers is not about slick lines or party piece questions. You don?t have to be sharp, you just have to genuinely care about your customers. Smile. Be interested in them. And get yourself into a tip-top mindset.

Trial done, Lord Sugar rocked up with Ronald McDonald, Colonel Sanders and some bigwigs from the fast food chains to try the two restaurants, hear the sales pitch and ask a few questions of the Apprentices. Apart from Jim?s elementary maths error of 60 meals at ?7 each is ?4800 (and then, when corrected, ?4200) this was uneventful although it was clear that the MyPy idea had Caraca?s cracked. Jim claimed that his mistake was out of character as he was good at maths. I wondered whether that was at the same school where he had been taught how to use the apostrophe?

It?s ?420, okay Jim?

In the Boardroom?

In the boardroom the teams had been marked out of 10 by the industry experts in each of four areas? brand identity, customer experience, food quality and business viability. The scores were in?

Jim, Tash and Suzy had averaged 4 out of 10.
Helen and Tom had averaged 7 out of 10.

For the first time that I remember Lord Alan added nothing and did not say that the decision was his. I couldn?t help but wonder whether if Helen and Tom had been in the losing team he might have said that the decision was his. But he didn?t need to. Helen and Tom were told not to pass Go, not to collect ?200 and to go straight to the final.

Jim, Tash and Suzy looked uneasy.

Back in the Boardroom?

Lord Sugar asked the losers whether they had a business plan? You know, sales, costs, customers, margins? that sort of stuff.

They didn?t.

Seriously. Sack the lot. You?re one week from going into business with one of these people Al and they didn?t have a business plan! Tash and Suzy were arguing, Tash can?t stop saying ?Yeah?, Suzy thinks she is good at selling and yet has tanked the sales exercises and Jim totally failed to manage this task or give the ?girls? any direction.

But the TV rules must say that they are going to tear apart three business plans next week and invest in one so two? must go through to the final.

?Suzanne, I like you. You got yourself through school. You?ve set up a business. You?re in the final. Jim, you can sure talk but you?re alright I guess. Tash, I?ve had it with you, yeah? You?re fired, yeah!?

Financial Opportunities You Can Benefit From When Hoping To Go To ...

When it comes to getting a college education most people can concur that the expenses can be shocking at best. Even the least expensive colleges in the country can add up over a four or five year period of time creating crippling debt for individuals who do not qualify for a number of the better grant programs of substantial scholarships.

The issue lies in the fact that the mother and father of most conventional college students make a lot of cash to qualify for the free educational funding that needs based and very few qualify for the limited number of scholarships that are accessible to students based on merit. Even some of those that qualify competition and intense and there are no assurances. Enter the student loan. There are all kinds of student education loans and unfortunately with increasing expenses associated with college attendence and the increasing necessity of a college degree for achievement in this nation it?s becoming more and more difficult to pay the price that is related to higher education.

There are three kinds of loans that are commonly found for college students. They include federal student loans, federal plus loans, and private student loans. Each type of loan has pros and cons that are exclusive to that specific loan. Below I will give a little information about each of the loan types and whom they could benefit.

Student loans. There are three various kinds of student loans: subsidized, unsubsidized, and Perkins loans.

Perkins loans are just open to college students who show exceptional monetary need. These loans can be obtained at a 5% interest rate and are available to both graduate and undergraduate students. Perkins loans are extended through the university you attend and will be paid back to the university unlike the other kinds of student loans, which are repaid to the lending agency.

Subsidized student loans are loans wherein the interest is delayed right up until graduation or else you cease to be a qualifying student. Exactly what this implies is the fact that while you are responsible for paying back the loan upon graduation the interest on these loans doesn?t start to accumulate until you begin repayment six months right after graduation or you cease to be at least a half time college student of the university. You must qualify based on your earnings in order to receive a subsidized student loan. Although the needs requirements for these loans isn?t as serious as those required in order to get a Perkins loan you have to still qualify.

Unsubsidized student education loans do not require certification on a needs basis. You have to be a student and signed up at least half time in order to receive an unsubsidized student loan. What?s promising except for people who do not qualify based on needs for other education loan choices is that this kind of loan is available to all qualifying students regardless of need. The interest on these loans nevertheless starts to accumulate immediately, which suggests that they are able to really add up with time.

Plus loans are loans that are taken out by the parents of students who need the money in order to cover educational expenses. The maximum amount that can be borrowed is the expense of attendence minus any educational funding awards a student has already received. The repayment on these loans begins two months following the bank loan is distributed and the payment term could be up to 10 years.

To be able to cover the costs involved in schooling which go far above exactly what the government recognizes as acceptable college related expenses you can choose to go the road of non-public student loans instead of depending exclusively upon federal educational funding for your education loan source. These loans need that you get certified in order to receive them based on your credit instead of your need and must be used for educational purposes only. With these particular financial loans you really need to ensure you read all the small print as various businesses offer different conditions and various perks. You should truly take the time and compare prices and options before taking out a private education loan and this ought to be done only as a last resort.

Student loans for many can be the difference in attending school and getting the education you?re hoping for and not being able to pay the great costs that go along with higher education. Because of this you should treat them with respect and never take them casually.

Man captured in NH is arraigned in NY fire deaths (AP)

WHITE CREEK, N.Y. ? An ex-convict with Nazi swastika tattoos was arraigned Thursday evening on arson and murder charges after the fiery deaths of his mother, stepfather and stepbrother at their home and an extensive manhunt for him.

Matthew Slocum was arraigned in town court on three counts of second-degree murder as well as first- and second-degree arson, White Creek Town Justice Philip Sica said. The charges also accuse Slocum of shooting the victims with a firearm. He pleaded not guilty and was jailed without bail while awaiting a preliminary hearing July 19.

Slocum, 23, surrendered in Gilsum, N.H., late Wednesday following a daylong manhunt in three states. Police had been looking for him, his girlfriend and their baby since early Wednesday, when a fire erupted at the White Creek home he shared with his family.

Slocum did not speak during a brief court hearing earlier Thursday in Keene, N.H., on a fugitive from justice charge. He agreed to return to New York.

Washington County Sheriff Roger Leclaire said autopsies were being done Thursday and authorities wouldn't discuss a possible motive or details of the killings and fire. He said Slocum was cooperating with investigators.

Police said the 5-foot-11, 200-pound Slocum has Nazi swastikas tattooed on each arm. It was unclear if he had a job. His Facebook page's "About Matthew" entry reads: "I'm a beast."

Washington County sheriff's Lt. Jeff Tucker said Slocum had been in trouble before in and around his hometown, located amid the rolling, scenic farmland along the Vermont state line.

"He was very well known to law enforcement," Tucker said from the police chief's office in the neighboring village of Cambridge.

Slocum was paroled Dec. 29, 2009, after serving most of a four-year sentence for breaking into a home in Cambridge and stealing cash, authorities said. He also had been charged with assault for an altercation at a local convenience store, police said.

Slocum is the son of Lisa Harrington, identified by friends and colleagues as one of the fire victims. They also said her husband, Dan, and his adult son Josh died in the fire in White Creek, 35 miles northeast of Albany, the capital. Amber Alerts had been issued in New York and New England for Slocum's girlfriend, 25-year-old Loretta Colegrove, of Cambridge, and their infant son, Raymond.

Slocum was taken into custody at the Gilsum home of his uncle Scott Slocum several hours after a New Hampshire state trooper spotted the wanted man's car Wednesday afternoon.

Cheshire County sheriff's Deputy Joshua Paulette said Thursday he was called in around 3 p.m. Wednesday and sent to the Gilsum Elementary School, where an all-day summer day care program was being held. He and a trooper arrived at the school at about 3:45 p.m. and moved about 20 kids, including Scott Slocum's two daughters, to the school library, the farthest point in the building from the Slocum home.

The home is about 200 yards from the school.

"Our primary concern was the safety of the kids," Paulette said Thursday from where he was guarding Matt Slocum's black Ford Mustang, which was parked in the woods off a remote dirt road, partially covered with a tarp.

Ray Britton, the owner of the Gilsum Village Store, about 100 yards from the Slocum home, said all side streets in Gilsum were blocked off at about 4 p.m. Wednesday. Tucked in the middle of the blockade, he stayed open for three extra hours and ferried orders for food, cigarettes and other items to neighbors, news crews and others outside the zone.

"It was crazy last night," he said.

After several hours of negotiations with police, Matt Slocum freed Colegrove and the baby, authorities said. A short time later, Slocum surrendered, they said.

The Amber Alerts were issued after Slocum left his burning White Creek home in the black 2003 Ford Mustang. He was reported near Colegrove's mother's home in Adams, Mass., at about 5 a.m.

The sheriff said Colegrove and her child were with her family in Massachusetts on Thursday and she wouldn't be charged.

People who knew the Harringtons said they were a well-known and well-liked couple in White Creek, where Dan was the deputy highway superintendent for the past five years.

"Jeepers creepers, when you lose somebody who's in your town and you're close to them, he's going to be sorely missed, he really will," said White Creek Town Supervisor Bob Shay, who described Dan Harrington as "one of those quiet, can-do guys."

Shay said he last spoke with Harrington on Tuesday night at a town board meeting at which the deputy superintendent stood in for his vacationing boss. Just hours later, Harrington's body was found among the smoldering rubble of his home.

"That's tough to handle," Shay said.

Vince Canini, superintendent of the Cambridge Central School District, which includes White Creek, said Slocum and Loretta Colegrove were students there but didn't graduate from the local high school.

Jonathan Slocum, Matthew's uncle, said he was having a difficult time believing his nephew was a suspect in the deaths.

"If you're asking to me to speak to the person," he said in a phone interview, "Matthew is a loving son and a loving brother."

Street League Skateboarding ? Emerson College Sports Business Society

Lexie Fleege, Marketing Communications, 2013

flipskateboards.com

In May 2010, DC pro-skateboarder Rob Dyrdek created Street League Skateboarding, the only league of its kind dedicated exclusively to street skateboarders. The event gained a following and was backed by a couple of big name sponsorships. Through these sponsorships, Dyrdek was able to shine a light on the underground, yet professional, sport of street skateboarding.

The presenting sponsors for Street League Skateboarding in 2010 were DC and Monster Energy, who returned to sponsor the tour again this year. Dyrdek said he was ?honored to have two of his closest sponsors ? [to] participate in the launch of Street League.? Monster Energy President Mark Hall added their sponsorship shows their ?continued support for Rob and street skateboarding.? President of DC Americas, Anton Nistl said the sponsorship was a great reflection of the DC brand, ?[street skateboarding] was always a cornerstone of our brand.?

The DC Pro Tour Fueled by Monster Energy features 24 of the best skateboarders in the world and hit the road again for their four-stop tour that started this May. DC and Monster returned as the presenting sponsors, and showed their commitment to skateboarding through a multi-year partnership with Street League Skateboarding. Two of the media sponsors were ESPN and the Skateboard Mag, both of which feature the events. ESPN and ESPN2 broadcast the event live from the Seattle stop in May and the Kansas City stop in June. The Glendale, AZ stop in July and in Newark, NJ in August will both also be broadcast live.

The tour gives fans the opportunity to attend skating events for two days in each city, as the league qualifiers will be open to the public. The riders will be competing head-to-head for a $1.6 million prize purse. The skaters will also benefit from the tour through each of their own sponsorships ranging from sports drinks like Gatorade and Vitamin Water to skateboard parts companies like Silver Trucks and Pig Wheels. The sponsors are mainly exclusive to skateboarding, which find the exposure beneficial for their brand. Other sponsors, like Red Bull, Gatorade, and Vitamin Water also sponsor other extreme sports like the X Games, which feature sports like BMX and snowboarding.

Professional skateboarders garner a large base of companies that support them. Skateboarders gain the most from the sponsorship of board companies, because it?s pretty hard to consider someone a professional skateboarder is they don?t have a board company backing them. Pros should be making at least $750 every month from these sponsorships with about a $3,000 cap each month. Sponsorships from shoe companies are considered the jackpot of sponsorships and are a part of every skater?s dream. Clothing companies are also considered a huge, even though they may ask the skater to appear in questionable ads. Wheels are appealing business ventures for people with deep pockets who want to get involved in skateboarding. Professionals usually pull in around $1,000 to $2,000 a month from these sponsorships.

What other companies do you think would be a good fit to sponsor extreme sports? Don?t forget to catch the Glendale, AZ stop July 16-17 and championship stop in Newark, NJ August 28 on ESPN2. You can catch up on the action at the DC Pro Tour Fueled by Monster Energy on their official site.

It is the study of the humanities important?

John Milton in his epic poem Paradise Lost, has as theme the creation of the angels, man, mankind fell from grace and subsequent redemption of mankind through Jesus Christ. Milton tried to open his verses "to justify the ways of God to the people." This poem, written during the seven years between 1658 ? 1665, tries, the essence of evil in the world, man's place in the cosmology of God, angels and demons, and to explain the nature of the trinity and the crucifixion of Jesus explained 'and resurrection. Of course, the task of Milton is huge, but it failed to achieve its goals in a remarkable manner, producing the finest poem in the English language in the process.

What can we say of Milton aim to "justify the ways of God to the people?" I think that this feeling, the understanding of man's position in the cosmos, is central to the study of humanities. From what it stands for safety, to be human, the theme of man's position in the understandingCosmos is not unique to Milton, is in fact the center of each piece of great Western literature ever written. Since the early beginnings in myth, literature addressed the relationship between man and his environment.

But the biggest question remains: What is the purpose of a study of the humanities Why do people in the humanities 21st Century to study?

In pursuit of literature and to a limited extent, of Western art, from the Greeks toToday we see several themes emerge.

1st The man is worried about his relationship with God and other spiritual beings.
2nd The man is worried about his place in the cosmos, as it agrees with the things known scientific or empirical.
3rd The man is about his relationship with other men, why and how it fits with his colleagues worried.

And 'from the humanities, that humans begin to answer these questions. Note the wording of the statement: we are lookingto answer a question, definitive answers can not be found.

But want to say what the businessman, the man replies, "do the shopping," the man who has dedicated his life for the man to whom literature is a waste of time? How can we justify, "the ways of God to the people?"

The answer to this question is not easy, nor simple, but perhaps we can define what is understood today to begin by training and providing a brief history of technical education, as opposed to aliberal education. According to the latest census conducted in the United States in 2000 and updated in 2002, 84% of adults over 25 years, graduated from high school. According to the same census data, 27% of adults over 25 years, get a degree. About 9% of the population has a bachelor's degree or higher. Closely related to the attainment of a bachelor's degree or higher is connected to the hope of winning more. Averagea mature person should earn $ 1.2 million over the course of his life, people who earn a bachelor's degree $ 2.1 million over the course of their lives to earn, while expecting the holder of a doctoral degree, we get to 3, $ 4,000. 000 over the entire life span. Lawyers, doctors and dentists are expected to earn $ 4,400,000 during their lifetime. (1)

The relationship between education level and ability is the reward is, of course not new. But the increasing emphasis on"Practical" or applied learning, which has accelerated in the last 30-40 years, is actually very different from the curriculum, which had been practiced since the birth of humanism in the document mentioned. The increase in technical or learning can be applied directly to the growth of modern society, and the demand for qualified persons as employees and managers linked to trade within the company.

The provision of a range of features geared to vocational trainingAspects of life, the necessary expertise (such as "labor"), has led to a mentality that knowledge should be to a certain set of skills, the pragmatic and quantifiable, are directed out that the development of other skills somewhat superfluous.

The emphasis on "measurable" is a term that management is a science and not an "art" out. The definition of management science is similar to the social sciences, a science, the "soft" asConflict with one of the "harder" sciences like physics or chemistry. A number of management theories have been proposed which attempt to determine the "science" behind the tasks of running a business.

The relatively new degree of MBA (Master of Business Administration) has been developed to deliver the first half of the twentieth century into a formal program for new managers in the "science" of management train. The typical MBA curriculum of the university is composed of a corequantitative set of classes, a series of case studies of actual work experience and study in the areas of marketing, human resources, finance, operations and logistics. These classes are all geared towards providing a range of skills in a general economic context and according to the school are more or less quantitative.

The result of this training is that we generate more and more MBA graduates in recent years, with the averageSalaries of these graduates increased. According to the U.S. Census Bureau, 116 475 graduates with an MBA in 2000 and 2001. (2)

In his book, The Leader brings, industrial psychologist Michael Macoby, home to the point that today's educational system working, but as the humanities, says:
Educational institutions to justify the first curriculum in terms of preparation for a successful career people and only secondarily for life outside of work. The workplace canbetter not change for workers with better education, but education just because they adaptable to what is at work. (3)

While we are producing a growing number of MBA graduates, it seems to be a growing gap between the knowledge imparted by these programs, and guidance issued by the graduates of these programs. Warren Bennis and Burt Nanus, a leader in her book make the case that there is a gap between the MBA programs and graduatesbring modern business world.
. . . Education Management is primarily, if not exclusively based on the mechanistic pseudo-rational "theories" of management and produced 60,000 new MBAs each year. The gap between the reality of management education and leadership in the workplace is disturbing, to say the least, and probably explains why the public seems to be a distorted (and negative) image of the American economy to maintain life.

But the image problem, although serious, is not the main thingProblem. The main problem is that what is management education is very good, good people / women leaders to acquire the train the technical skills to solve problems graduates. They are problem solvers, highly qualified and experienced staff. Problem solving, while not a trivial exercise is a far cry from the creative process and profoundly human need for leadership. What we need is management training but leadership training. (4)

Thomas Teal, Senior EditorHarvard Business Review makes an argument more convincing in his article "The Human Side of Management" and the human side of running a business, is the side with people offers which are often given little attention in our educational institutions, and within most companies itself. Teal said that the management requires more than just technical competence, requires empathy and imagination.
Management requires a great imagination. If a company is the vision and strategyto differentiate their offerings and gain a competitive advantage, it must be an original. Original must mean non-conventional means and often counterintuitive. In addition, it takes ingenuity and spirit of reason, various people and elements into a unified whole, but quite original. There is also a name for this ability. It's called fantasy esemplastic, and although it is generally attributed to poets. . . (5)

Teal its leadership in the evaluation ofCompany:
Another great feature of the manager's integrity. All managers think that they behave with integrity, but in practice, many problems with the concept. Some think that the integrity is the same as secrecy or blind loyalty. Others seem to believe means consistency, poor in one thing. Some confuse it with some discretion and with the other qualities ? honesty ? or simply do not lie. What does integrity management is ambitious anddifficult. It means being responsible, of course, but it also means communicating clearly and consistently, as his honest broker, keeping promises, to know oneself and to avoid ulterior motives of other people hanging out to dry. Is very close to what we used to the glory that is not part of the call to lie to yourself. (6)

Teal finally speaks the types of managers, the people enjoy in the workplace:
The name of the manager are the people with admirationalways the ones who delegate their powers, they feel powerful and capable subordinates, and take a lot of creativity and a sense of responsibility that will forever change their behavior. (7)

Surely, the thinking goes, even if the business school trains managers to be technically good, if it needs unmet, the companies will act to correct them. The company recognized that education is necessary, try to provide qualityTraining in their own interest. Unfortunately, this is often not the case, or where businesses recognize the need for better education, the proposed methods is often not what is needed.

Consider the article by Bernard Avishai, associate editor of the Harvard Business Review, "What is the social compact Business," evaluates the agreement between the company and its managers and concludes that the education system must be reformed, and that the activity must take the leadin this endeavor, as a form of "enlightened self-interest." His remedy for this situation is the model of training on the principles of society and the development of quality circles in the fields of education, a Six Sigma approach, if you want. Educators develop
. . . A new set of incentives and accountability measures, the real opportunities for the employees of the school, whose students can make real progress. (8)

At the same time, schools offer
. . . A new language of the declaration for the city schoolCards (thus, for example, students "customers" are students in the absence of "defects"). (9)

Later in the same article, Mr. Avishai postulated that schools should "discipline of competition" (10), presumably to teach the schools operate more like businesses.

In summary, the idea of ??"man of action," the study of management science is the basis for setting educational standards for the modern, produces serious and talented students of the MBAAnd graduates should be called to curricula for school and after college to be set.

In fact, this practice has continued at a steady pace over the past 30 years. So how should we assess the results that the canon is the "man of action?" In the past ten years we have witnessed the largest financial fraud ever in history as World Com, Adelphi Communications, Enron, Global Crossing, Tyco and industries that are perpetrated by all prominent business school graduates out. InFailed, however, closed his people, who were accused of leading companies to take real leadership, and people who worked for them a blind eye to the problems that have plagued the company.

How might these scandals happen, where was the oversight that has been developed to prevent the occurrence of fraud? In her book, The Smartest Guys in the Room, The Rise and Fall of Enron Scandalous astonishingly, Bethany McLean and Peter Elkind point to a culture that was filled with MBAwere so large that no environmental strategy involved concentrating on the daily operations. Also set up the compensation that encourages excessive results, and then no set-up reporting systems to ensure adequate monitoring of the results. Finally, the culture of Enron was one of the "bigger is better" and exaggeration, which began at the highest levels in the company, and worked up to all levels of society. (11) If the results were suspected fraudulent, have the people not to act to correctthem, because fraud was endemic, have the right to abuse the death of the "golden goose" out.

This image of an excess of corporate greed and selfishness is not unique to Enron, in fact, has been repeatedly mentioned in varying degrees for all organizations. So how can we say that the practice works of "management science" and that the company should be entrusted to set the curriculum?

In response to this question, we have returned to the opening of this premisePaper is interested in studying the humanities? Or to the point of the study or the humanities relevant in an age in which the most important driver of social change is the modern society? For both questions the answer is emphatically ? YES!

We can not ignore, that is, for better or worse, the company as a construction organization to stay here. A company is the most effective way to organize large groups of people at a single target, and large sums to increaseCapital is needed to secure financial resources to achieve these goals. But a society is a construct, not a person, and people are needed to achieve the objectives for the curriculum and teaching methods to establish excellence. The companies will be guided by "enlightened self-interest:" people are sometimes driven by altruism, charity and compassion, all of which establish an effective educational standards.

It is time to stop churning out hundreds of thousands of tech-savvy "doer" and insteadFocus on a number of programs to teach people to think and to do then. The ancients, and teaches them the future statesmen recruited the best minds to find them, could be trusted to develop their young. Philip of Macedonia, in the search for a teacher to his son, Alexander, recruited the best minds of his time, Aristotle. Alexander did learn to perform dead numbers, accounting for tax and statistical analysis? No, he learned what it means to be a man of means ? Aristotle taughtthe character. (Not sure if all of his conquests has applied these principles, but Plutarch mentions in his Life of Alexander is a noble man, the just and merciful to those he conquered). Marcus was also a teacher 'Epictetus and the Stoics Erasmus taught the son of James IV of Scotland, and the sons of the Chancellor of the Exchequer in the UK.

We need to take a lesson from the ancients, it is important to the teaching of our brightest young trustMinds of our time. Of course, today's entrepreneurs made the wealth and power than the known in antiquity, but we do teach "character" and not how to develop the character. The character development is the most important feature of a liberal education to the middle of the twentieth century, when we had to turn back and began to emphasize the technical aspects of teaching at the expense of liberal arts.

Let us once again to Michael Macoby, and his workLeaders to understand their approaches on the educational needs of a leader.
What is most lacking in the training of leaders in our culture education in the humanities, especially in clear writing and speaking, but also in religion, philosophy, ethics, psychology and history is deep.

The best managers are well into the modern science and technology and the law, perhaps, and trained ahistorical social sciences such as economics. But they know little, "the story and the lack of meaningwhat it means for human development over time. They do not see that history is not an unbroken line of progress, but includes the liberal model of social organization, which appear and disappear, and they need to be discovered anew. You are aware that irrational rules and institutions were likely to be the rational solutions to a problem that no longer exists. You do not understand the modern scientific method does not spring full-grown in the eighteenth century, the mind, but rooted in the values ??of truthand independent research have been defended by heroic individuals. The science could not, without the courage of men like Galileo, Benjamin Franklin progress. To maintain and develop the scientific tradition, we must develop our human values, to fight against superstition, fear and mistrust that the uncertainty in the dark mushroom. (12)

The lack of proper training company, as currently structured is that it teaches a small group of Competencewithout a context in which to use these new talents. One is a series of statistical techniques, and something to be able to teach using these techniques in a real environment.
Turning again Macoby we read that businessmen often lack the understanding involved in the problems of working people, because you have taught them to understand the issues in a broader context.
Elsa Porter and Pher Gyllenhammar (in their book, People at Work), to underline their view thatLeadership training should teach the ethical and humanistic traditions of religion, philosophy and literature. Stan Lundin (Mayor of Jamestown, NY 1969-1976, and three time Democratic congressman from New York) noted that in the new factories, managers are able to solve new problems to overcome, because they are not prepared in the Humanities be trained. Once you give up manual control articulate their understanding of people and the ability, the principles of moral behaviorthey do not. Says

The problem is not lack of modern psychological insight, but the lack of deep meaning in the humanities and the struggle for human values ??in changing times to realize. We have engineers, technicians, but that does not really understand people. The questions scientific deeper, you can not trust science to solve problems. These are ethical questions. We went beyond the simple scientific solution for everything. "

. . . The study of the Bible,Comparative religion, philosophy, ethics and psychology, and leads to irrational great literature to explore the inner life, especially the struggle for the development of the human heart against ignorance, conference, injustice, disappointment, betrayal and passion. This training prepares his fear, envy, pride and self-deception face. This raises questions about the nature of human destructiveness and the legitimate use of force. Without them, a future leader tends to be confusinghis character with human nature, courage, courage, integrity, worldly success, the thrill of winning with happiness. (73)

Perhaps, then we came into the nature of why a study of the humanities is just as valid today: it provides a mirror of the soul, a touchstone for the man's place in the world to understand and society in general. Pass it provides a framework for the seemingly unrelated events every day, gives us the comfort that we are not alone when he askeddifficult to take action or request-for. It allows us to relate to other people, even if we are forced by circumstances to perform actions that can be uncomfortable both parties. The study of the humanities provides us with a historical perspective that is lacking in numbers simply armed, and analyzing trends.

The study of the humanities are in a position, the feeling of isolation, unreality, and dis-connection, it seems Wall in our society to counteract. You canCounter feelings of hopelessness and despair that have infiltrated our lives in the twentieth and 21st Century. It can serve as a bridge to the great minds who have gone before us, so you can play a Shakespeare or open a novel by Dickens, and understand their time and their concerns and gather information about how to similar problems responding. We are in a position with the great men and women to speak from the past, and allow us, our concerns and needs that are real and setannoying, in the context of the broader historical context, and take some small comfort from the fact that so far we are not really alone, after all. Finally, the study of the humanities enables us to understand "the ways of God," in dealing with our fellow human beings.
