Photos by Gretchen Robinette ? The annual LBGT Pride march occurred on Sunday, June 24 in New York City this year. The first march took place exactly a year after the Stonewall Riots on June 28, 1970. Photographer Gretchen Robinette sent us this large and amazing gallery of images chronicling the parade, revelers and a spontaneous dance party that occured on Pier 57 after the march.

You Can't Beat the iPad Just by Losing Money [Google]

The most remarkable thing about Google's Nexus 7 tablet can't be found on its spec sheet. It won't show up in any benchmark, and it has nothing to do with that zippy new operating system. If you want to know the true significance of the Nexus 7, all you need to look at is the price tag. More »

Time for rubber match between Phelps, Lochte

OMAHA, Neb. (AP) ? The Michael Phelps and Ryan Lochte Show is down to its last act at the U.S. Olympic trials.

The world's two best swimmers go at it in the 200-meter individual medley starting with preliminaries on Friday morning. So far, they are 1-1 against each other in thrilling races.

Lochte won their first showdown in the 400 IM on opening night. Then Phelps got revenge by winning the 200 freestyle on Wednesday.

The 200 IM is up for grabs.

Lochte beat Phelps in the event at last year's world championships in Shanghai while setting the first world record since high-tech body suits were banned. But the Floridian also has to swim the prelims and semifinals of the 200 backstroke ? he is the world champ in it ? on Friday, while Phelps only has one event.

"I have a hard double tomorrow," he said.

Lochte scratched the 100 freestyle final on Friday night to ease his schedule and focus on his stronger events. Matt Grevers also scratched, and their moves opened up spots in the eight-man final for Jason Lezak and Dave Walters. Lezak saved Phelps' bid for eight gold medals in Beijing with his anchor leg of the 400 free relay.

"He better owe me something," Lochte joked when asked about giving Lezak another chance to get back to the Olympics at 36.

The 100 free is loaded with Olympic medalists like Lezak, Nathan Adrian, Ricky Berens, Cullen Jones and Garrett Weber-Gale.

While Lochte advanced through the prelims and semis of the 100 free before bowing out, Phelps scratched the event altogether so he could steal a rare morning off. He spent part of Thursday in his hotel watching "Act of Valor" and ordering room service with training partner Allison Schmitt.

"We were able to just sit around and tell jokes," he said.

In the evening, he returned to the pool and easily won the 200 butterfly, his signature event and a favorite of his family since his two older sisters used to swim it, too.

"Very relaxing day. And yeah, I think it showed in the race," Phelps said. "I was comfortable. That was something that just helped everything, and hopefully will carry through the rest of the meet."

Phelps took the lead on the third lap and he finished a body length ahead of the field in 1 minute, 53.65 seconds, his easiest final yet in Omaha.

Phelps said he will have to go even faster in London to claim his third straight gold in the 200 fly.

"It's not a good enough time to win a gold medal, but I think I'm OK with it," he said. "Going into the last wall. I didn't want to have any close ones, so I tried to stay under as long as I could. Today was the best my stroke has felt throughout the whole meet."

Phelps' biggest challenge came at the end of the night when he visited the news conference room, where the air conditioning was cranked and cold air was blowing.

"Sorry, I can't even think right now, it's freezing in this place. Holy crap," he said, his arms wrapped around his shivering body, "and I just got out of a 48-degree ice bath."

Phelps' victory locked up his third individual event for the London Games, and he's got the 200 IM and 100 butterfly left in Omaha. That sets him up to swim eight events at the Olympics, including a likely spot on all three relays, and gives him a chance to duplicate his record from the Beijing Games.

On Friday, Eric Shanteau and Brendan Hansen are the favorites in the 200 breaststroke final, although Clark Burckle goes in with the fastest qualifying time. Teresa Crippen, sister of the late open-water swimmer Fran Crippen, has a shot at making the Olympic team in the 200 butterfly final.

The other Olympic berth in the 200 fly went to Tyler Clary, who finished second with a time of 1:55.12 on Thursday.

"It was amazing," Clary said. "I can't even put into words how the end of that race felt, not only the pain in the last 20 meters but just the complete and total turnaround."

Phelps' pal Schmitt was equally dominating in winning the 200 free. She broke her own American record with a time of 1:54.40, the best in the world this year. She had already won the 400 free here.

"I didn't feel like I was on my record pace, but I could hear the crowd," Schmitt said. "And when I touched and saw the flames go off I was pretty excited before I even looked up and saw the time."

Seventeen-year-old Missy Franklin locked up another Olympic race, claiming the second 200 spot in 1:56.79. She rallied from fifth place at the first turn.

Franklin already won the 100 backstroke and looks poised to have another huge performance in London, after breaking through at last year's worlds with five medals.

Dana Vollmer and Lauren Perdue finished third and fourth, assuring themselves of being in the pool for the 800 free relay. Shannon Vreeland (fifth) and Alyssa Anderson (sixth) also are likely to be taken to London as potential relay swimmers.

Caitlin Leverenz became a first-time Olympian with a victory in the 200 IM. She was dominating on the final two legs ? breaststroke and freestyle ? and pulled away to win in 2:10.22.

Ariana Kukors, who won gold in the event at the 2009 world championships and was third at last year's worlds, rallied to claim a spot on her first Olympic team, as well. She touched second in 2:11.30, just 25-hundredths ahead of Elizabeth Pelton, who led the first two laps but couldn't hang on.

Movie Review: 'People Like Us' ? CBS Philly

(Chris Pine, Elizabeth Banks, and Michael Hall D'Addario star with Michelle Pfeiffer in "People Like Us.")

(Chris Pine, Elizabeth Banks, and Michael Hall D?Addario star with Michelle Pfeiffer in ?People Like Us.?)

By Bill Wine
KYW Newsradio 1060

PHILADELPHIA (CBS) ? In a summer movie season full of comic book superheroes and supernatural creatures, it?s a relief to get the occasional movie focused on people like us.

That?s one of the reasons why the family-secrets drama, People Like Us, is so welcome.

Chris Pine plays Sam Harper, a glib, New York-based, twentysomething wholesaler salesman who learns that he needs to return home to Los Angeles to settle his recently deceased and estranged father?s estate and fulfill his final wishes. It?s clear that Sam is not exactly devastated, to say the least, by the news of his father?s demise.

35 Movie Review: People Like Us

(3 stars out of 4)

When he and his law-student girlfriend, Hannah, played by Olivia Wilde, travel to attend the funeral ?- after Sam tries to delay just long enough to actually miss it ? he learns that his record-producing dad had a secret daughter out of wedlock.?? She?s struggling 30-year-old single mother Frankie, a bartender and recovering alcoholic played by Elizabeth Banks, and she has a rebellious 11-year-old young son, Josh, played by Michael Hall D?Addario.

Sam?s father has left instructions about $150,000 that Sam is supposed to deliver to the half-sister he didn?t know he had. However, Sam needs that money to get out of debt.? So he insinuates his way into the life of Frankie and her son, but without revealing who he is or why he?s there.

Nor does he share this information with his grieving and seemingly resentful mother, played by Michelle Pfeiffer.

Debuting director Alex Kurtzman ?- who has written screenplays for such high-profile movies as Transformers, Star Trek (starring Pine), and Cowboys & Aliens ?- works from a semi-autobiographical script he co-wrote with Roberto Orci and Jody Lambert that perhaps delays the inevitable confession by Sam that the whole film hinges on to a point that strains credulity.

But the film is so emotion-drenched that we?re willing to go with it.

And the key performances make it work.? Pine is fine in the lead, clearly demonstrating vividly the effect that Sam?s parent issues have had on the formation of his aggressive personality.

But it?s Banks and Pfeiffer, both playing characters struggling admirably with obvious emotional wounds, who absolutely shine.

All three get the opportunity to show us colors in their acting palettes that they?ve rarely been able to dip into before, and all three turn in sympathetic performances that get us invested by not only making us understand what they?ve been through dealing with either an absent father or an unfaithful husband, but also help us to feel pleased about their growth and closure by film?s end.

So we?ll inherit 3 stars out of 4 for a sibling-discovery dramedy about family and forgiveness for grownups, People Like Us.?? With comic book-inspired fantasies all over the movie marketplace, it?s emotionally compelling and accessible movies like this that bring us, gratefully, back down to earth.

Aubree Eliza Weaver: The Problem With Re-Elections

For awhile now, I've had some qualms about political incumbents, re-elections, and multiple terms. The whole concept just doesn't sit well with me.

For all intents and purposes, I'm going to focus on the problems concerning presidents who are embarking on their second term in office, as that's where the problems are most evident.

Unlike other political offices, a president's second term (with the exclusion of the one and only Franklin Delano Roosevelt) will always be their last.

With that in mind, here are some interesting facts on our past executives. A total of 22 presidents have only served one term.

Five presidents died during their first terms, and therefore didn't have the opportunity to run for re-election (Harrison, Taylor, Garfield, Harding, and Kennedy). Five succeeded from the vice-presidency, but did not get re-elected following their own campaign for office (Tyler, Fillmore, Johnson, Arthur, and Ford). Last, but not least, 12 presidents have served just a single elected term, no ifs, ands, or buts (Adams, Van Buren, Polk, Pierce, Buchanan, Hayes, Harrison, Taft, Hoover, Carter, and Bush Sr).

Now, assassinations and resignations aside, the following are reasons as to why second term presidencies make me uneasy.

When candidates begin their initial campaigns for the presidency, they are full of idealistic platforms and spirited ammunition for change. Although these individuals may be making statements and portraying certain standards with the intention of pleasing voters across the country, the public/individuals ultimately voice their own opinion when entering the voting booth on election day.

Then, throughout the elected candidate's first term, his/her efforts are a culmination of their attempts at "making good" on their ambitious campaign promises while further attempting to keep things steady so as to secure their chances of re-election.

In other words, a lot of candidates seem to be on their "best behavior" from the day they announce their plans to run to the day their fate is decided for a second time by the population of the United States.

After they've finished celebrating their re-election to another term in office, the veil disappears and the true motives are displayed. They no longer have anything to lose. There will not be a next term or new national campaign -- they've peaked, in a sense.

Herein lies my question -- upon being re-elected, who is left for the president to impress? Sure, there's the threat of low approval ratings and impeachment (which realistically isn't a threat at all since only three presidents have faced impeachment -- one resigning and the other two having the impeachment overturned by the Senate), but does the country's dissatisfaction really even matter?

There is a concise divide between a president's first term and their last term. As I've previously stated, initially the elected president is busy trying to "please" everyone and not making enemies who will ruin their future. Towards the end, they set out to accomplish all of the slightly less-reasonable goals that they mentioned in that one debate in a small-town six years ago that everyone in attendance gaffed at. I mean, why not? Again, the worst that can happen is impeachment, but that has only happened during the terms of Jackson, Nixon, and Clinton.

Next to that, what role does a low approval rating even play? So what, a few people are unhappy... but that has little impact when viewing the greater picture.

I doubt I'm the only person in America who has had these thoughts. Seriously, a president's second elected term in office is just asking for radicalism or inaction.

Alright, I've finished my rant -- I swear.

A look at recent tech-industry earnings

Here is a summary of recent earnings and reports for selected technology companies and what they reveal about the state of spending and the overall economy:

April 6: Samsung Electronics Co. says it is expecting a record operating profit of $5.1 billion for the first quarter. It says the result would be a 97 percent rise from its operating profit a year earlier. Samsung estimated that its first quarter sales rose 21.6 percent from a year earlier. More details will come when Samsung releases its full quarterly results.

April 12: Google Inc. reports adjusted earnings and adjusted revenue that beat expectations. Google's revenue was helped by a 39 percent increase in "paid clicks," but the prices of its search-driven text ads continued to decline. CEO Larry Page called the first quarter "very strong," but acknowledgehd there's more work to do.

April 17: Yahoo Inc.'s first-quarter earnings show signs of modest progress under recently hired CEO Scott Thompson. Net income grew 28 percent from the same time last year and exceeded expectations. Revenue grew less than 1 percent, but represented a breakthrough because the company's revenue has been steadily falling for years.

IBM Corp. says first-quarter net income grew 7 percent, helped by strong profit margins in its services business and strong revenue growth across its software and services businesses. Revenue was flat overall because of declines in the hardware and financing segments, and revenue fell short of analysts' expectations. IBM increases its full-year guidance to at least $15 per share, above the $14.93 expected by analysts.

Intel Corp. says its net income in the first quarter fell 13 percent as spending on research and marketing rose while sales were flat.

April 18: EBay Inc. says its first-quarter net income grew 20 percent thanks to higher revenue from its PayPal business and brisk sales at its e-commerce websites. The results beat Wall Street's expectations.

Mobile phone chipmaker Qualcomm Inc. says its quarterly profit more than doubled as strong demand for smartphones boosted its sales; but it expects costs to increase as it makes more chips.

April 19: Microsoft Corp. fares better than analysts anticipated in its latest quarter, boosted by a surprising rise in sales of its Windows operating system for personal computers

Chipmaker Advanced Micro Devices Inc. reports adjusted earnings and revenue that beat Wall Street's expectations. AMD's revenue forecast for the current quarter was at $1.59 billion to $1.68 billion, while analysts surveyed by FactSet were expecting $1.59 billion.

Nokia Corp. reports a huge net loss, one of the company's worst ever quarters, and blames tougher-than-expected competition. It has faced stiff competition from the likes of Apple Inc.'s iPhone and handset makers using Google Inc.'s popular Android software.

April 23: Netflix Inc. says it suffered its first quarterly loss in seven years, but the setback was far smaller than analysts expected. Netflix had rising licensing fees and a bill for an international expansion. Netflix predicted that it would make money during the current quarter. Still, Wall Street was worried about tougher competition. Skittish investors keyed on a second-quarter forecast that calls for a slowdown in subscriber growth during the spring and early summer.

Chipmaker Texas Instruments Inc. says first-quarter net income fell 60 percent from a year ago as revenue shrank. But the results still beat analysts' expectations.

Xerox Corp. says first-quarter net income fell 4 percent as the company spent more on building its services business, which now makes up more than half the company's revenue. The company says it's investing in new offerings and long-term contracts in order to increase growth. In the short term, that has hurt profitability.

April 24: Apple Inc. reported blowout iPhone sales ? 35 million in the latest quarter, almost twice as many as it sold a year ago and above analyst expectations. Net income nearly doubled to $11.6 billion, and revenue was up 59 percent at $39.2 billion. IPad sales came in below analyst expectations, at 11.8 million units. But that was still two and a half times as many as it sold in the same quarter a year ago.

April 25: Motorola Solutions Inc., which sells communications equipment to government and corporate customers, says first-quarter net income declined from a year ago, when the company recorded a large tax-related gain. Revenue grew thanks to strong demand from the company's government customers.

April 26: Amazon.com Inc. reports strong quarterly earnings and says its Kindle Fire tablet computer remains its best-selling item. However, its outlook for revenue growth was slower than expected.

Online games company Zynga Inc. reports adjusted earnings of 6 cents a share, a penny better than what Wall Street expected. Revenue grew 32 percent.

April 27: A surge in Galaxy smartphone sales fueled earnings at Samsung Electronics to a record high in the first quarter, usually a tough season for the global consumer-electronics industry. The South Korean company outshined handset rivals such as Nokia Corp. Strong demand for high-end smartphones, such as the Galaxy Note and the Galaxy S2 introduced last year, helped mask lower profit from memory chips, another Samsung flagship business.

May 1: Mobile phone maker Motorola Mobility Holdings Inc. reports a slightly larger net loss in the first quarter as expenses grew more than revenue. Motorola says it still expects its acquisition by Google to close by the end of June. The deal still needs to be approved by authorities in China.

May 3: LinkedIn Corp. says its first-quarter net income more than doubled, and its revenue doubled from a year ago. Adjusted profit and revenue beat expectations. During the quarter, revenue grew across the company's divisions. The business-networking company also announces plans to buy presentation-sharing website SlideShare for $118.8 million.

May 9: Cisco Systems Inc. says its quarterly earnings surged 20 percent in the latest sign that a recently completed overhaul is paying off for the world's largest maker of computer-networking equipment. However, Cisco raised the specter of a sharp slowdown in technology spending, rattling investors already fretting about the economy's fragile condition. Cisco made a sobering forecast for the current quarter and traced it to skittish customers who are waiting longer to close deals and spending less money because of growing uncertainty about the economy, particularly in Europe and India.

May 14: Online deals company Groupon Inc. says it had a smaller net loss and sharply higher revenue in the first quarter, helped by increased demand from a growing customer base.

May 17: Salesforce.com Inc., which makes Web-based business software, says it had a net loss in the first quarter, but adjusted profit and revenue beat expectations. It raises its forecast for full-year results.

May 22: Dell Inc. reports disappointing first-quarter results and forecasts weak sales in the current quarter. The computer maker says sales to big businesses, consumers and the public sector decreased.

May 23: Hewlett-Packard Co. says it will cut 27,000 workers, or 8 percent of its work force, by October 2014. News of the cutbacks overshadowed the release of HP's latest quarterly results. The company's earnings and revenue were both better than analysts projected.

June 18: Oracle Corp says net income increased 8 percent and topped analysts' predictions. Oracle also posted a 7 percent gain in its sales of new software licenses, indicating there is still strong demand for technology that helps businesses automate their administrative tasks.

June 19: Software company Adobe Systems Inc. says net income in the latest quarter fell 2 percent, amid higher expenses. Revenue grew with strong sales of its Creative Suite product.

Good Taste Food and Drink ? Crystal Palace | seebyzoe

I love cheese!

This weekend I decided it was time to pop into Crystal Palace and treat myself to a selection of cheeses for my Sunday dinner. I have been avoiding cheese like the plague, after I quite possibly consumed more than my weights worth over Christmas. We stuffed ourselves and our guests full of delicious cheeses over a few months and then there was no other option, but to take a bit of a break for fear of me rolling down the road like a gigantic cheese ball.

I?m not going to lie, I?ve nibbled on a bit of cheddar and supermarket bought goats cheese here and there, but it has been quite some time since I invested in some real quality cheeses. All that changed this weekend and I?m back in the cheese game!

Good Taste Food in Crystal Palace offers a whole array of incredible cheeses and charcuterie, as well as beers from microbreweries around the country and wines? Oh so delectable wines! As a cheese novice, I find owner Manish Utton-Mishra and his staff to be excellent at guiding me to make the right choices. They even slip in little notes with your order, which includes the name of the cheese and a brief description about the flavour. I often ask them which of their fantastic range of crackers pair up with the cheeses and always come away with the perfect match.

In the past, I have also purchased rabbit from their store for a delicious bunny rabbit stew, which went down a treat. I had been looking for rabbit for some time to no avail, so this was a most excellent discovery.

Good Taste Food are soon to offer customers the opportunity to sit and relax in their backyard with beer, wine and cheese/charcuterie platters -? Something I will quite happily partake in.? If you get a chance, pop in and see what it?s all about. Crystal Palace is certainly worth the? trip, even if you are not from the area. On a sunny day, you have the park (complete with dinosaurs) and failing that, it is full of top quality restaurants, some excellent pubs as well as vintage furniture stores and many other delights.

It?s all about cheese moderation for me and I most definitely won?t be waiting this long again!

Do you love cheese? Is there a local store that you can?t live without?

Friends reel from shooting of teen lesbian couple

Courtesy of Jillian Manuel

Rainbow ribbons, goodbye messages, flowers and cut-out hearts were left near the site where police believe Mollie Judith Olgin, 19, and Mary Christine Chapa, 18, were shot last week in Portland, Tex.

By Miranda Leitsinger, msnbc.com

Friends and family of two teenage girls in a same-sex relationship who were shot in the head in a South Texas park expressed shock and grief Tuesday over the incident in which one of the young women was killed and the other severely injured.

Mollie Judith Olgin, 19, and Mary Christine Chapa, 18, were found in knee-deep grass in a nature area in Portland by a couple Saturday, said Portland Police Chief Randy Wright, who confirmed to msnbc.com details first reported by the Corpus Christi Caller Times.

Rainbow ribbons, goodbye messages, flowers and cut-out hearts were posted around the site where they were found. On Friday, a candlelight vigil and walk will be held for Chapa and Olgin.

?

?It?s something that I think all of us are going to carry with us for a while,? Frank Reyna, a friend of both girls, told msnbc.com. ?It?s going to take a while to get past this, the idea that there is somebody still out there that did this to these two amazing, beautiful people and that they?re walking free right now.?

Olgin, originally from Ingleside but recently living in Corpus Christi, died; Chapa, of Sinton, was rushed to a hospital where she had surgery and was in serious but stable condition on Sunday, local NBC affiliate kristv.com reported. Wright said Chapa was still in the hospital on Monday.

Police are investigating the shooting of two teenage girls in a same-sex relationship in a small Texas community along the Gulf of Mexico. KRIS reporter Lindsay Curtis has the story.

Wright said police had recovered a bullet casing from a large-caliber gun at the scene, but they haven?t found the weapon. A resident living nearby reported hearing two loud bangs Friday before midnight but believed?they were?from firecrackers, the newspaper said.

?If we had a name, you know, we?d be having a different conversation right now. But we have not been able to gather enough information to identify a suspect yet,? Wright said Monday. ?It appears as if ? this was not just a random attack but that?s something that we really have to develop over time.?

A makeshift memorial was set up near the site where police believe Mollie Judith Olgin, 19, and Mary Christine Chapa, 18, were attacked last week in Portland, Tex.

Calls placed Tuesday to Wright seeking an update on the case were not immediately returned.

Teen lesbian couple found shot in Texas park

Chandler Nunez, who noted that Olgin was one of her best friends in high school, said she was in shock.

? ? I cannot imagine anyone who would want to hurt such a loving and caring person,? she wrote to msnbc.com. ?This was incredibly unexpected and the lack of answers makes this tragedy all the more frustrating.?

Friends told kristv.com that the pair had been a couple for five months. Wright said he didn?t have any information about their relationship, noting that ?we understood from their friends that they were (in a romantic relationship). I know from ? Mollie?s parents that they were very close.?

Reyna, a 19-year-old university student, said he grew up with Chapa, and met Olgin his sophomore year of high school. He described Chapa as an athlete who played softball, and said Olgin, now a student at a nearby university, was focused on academics but also was a big joker. He last saw them together at a local coffee shop in May, which was the first time he saw them out as a couple.

?I?m glad that that was the last time that I saw Mollie in person, that that?s the memory that I can live with for the rest of my life, knowing that I saw her happy,? he said.

The couple?s relationship ?was a readily accepted thing,? he added, and was not what their friends focused on.

?We focused on their personalities and how they got along with everybody else ? their kindheartedness and their ability to just make other people smile and make each other smile,? he said. ?We didn?t care ? what they were, it?s who they were.?

When asked if police had been able to determine if the girls' sexuality played any role in the shootings, Wright told msnbc.com on Monday: ?That?s always something that we?re looking for, but as of this point, we have not been able to establish that that had anything to do with the attack.?

He also said they had been in communication with Chapa. He noted all indications were that ?third parties? were involved in the assault.

The park, more of nature area with some parts overgrown and no lights, was often frequented by visitors during the day, but not at night. It is located along a bluff overlooking a bay, Wright said, with some homes situated nearby.

?We?re not really sure how they got to the point that they were found,? he said. ?It is a scenic overlook with a wooden deck and there is a place at the edge of the deck where you can actually go down a very steep incline into a grassy area that leads down to the shoreline and that?s where they were found.?

The crime rate is low in Portland, north of Corpus Christi on the Gulf of Mexico, Wright said. The last homicide occurred two years ago.

Courtesy of Kristen Veit

Charlene Camp, Hilary Avila, Myracle Taylor, Bailey Sanders, Jillian Manuel, Tim Robinson (behind Manuel), Kristen Veit, LuAnn Garza, Valerie Tanon and Franceska Hiracheta were some of the couple's friends and well-wishers who created a memorial at the site around where police believe the young women were attacked last week in Portland, Tex.

While people in the South Texas community prepare for their memorial service, another candlelight vigil for the pair has been organized by Cleve Jones, a gay civil rights activist who conceived the AIDS Memorial Quilt, for Wednesday evening in San Francisco. On Facebook, people noted they would hold vigils in other cities, too.

"You were taken too soon," Megan Olgin, who identified herself as Olgin?s sister on Facebook, wrote in a post. "I love you and always will. You're my guardian angel. I love you little sister. Forever and always ?"

Editor's note: Chapa's friends spell her name as Kristene, though the Portland police list it as Christine. Calls placed to the police to clarify were not immediately returned.

Tortoise Lonesome George is dead

Lonesome George, a giant tortoise, was believed to be the last of his subspecies

Staff at the Galapagos National Park in Ecuador say Lonesome George, a giant tortoise believed to be the last of its subspecies, has died.

Scientists estimate he was about 100 years old.

Park officials said they would carry out a post-mortem to determine the cause of his death.

With no offspring and no known individuals from his subspecies left, Lonesome George became known as the rarest creature in the world.

For decades, environmentalists unsuccessfully tried to get the Pinta Island tortoise to reproduce with females from a similar subspecies on the Galapagos Islands.

Park officials said the tortoise was found dead in his corral by his keeper of 40 years, Fausto Llerena.

While his exact age was not known, Lonesome George was estimated to be about 100, which made him a young adult as the subspecies can live up to an age of 200.

Lonesome George was first seen by a Hungarian scientist on the Galapagos island of Pinta in 1972.

Environmentalists had believed his subspecies (Chelonoidis nigra abingdoni) had become extinct.

Lonesome George became part of the Galapagos National Park breeding programme.

After 15 years of living with a female tortoise from the nearby Wolf volcano, Lonesome George did mate, but the eggs were infertile.

He also shared his corral with female tortoises from Espanola island, which are genetically closer to him than those from Wolf volcano, but Lonesome George failed to mate with them.

He became a symbol of the Galapagos Islands, which attract some 180,000 visitors a year.

Galapagos National Park officials said that with George's death, the Pinta tortoise subspecies has become extinct.

They said his body would probably be embalmed to conserve him for future generations.

Tortoises were plentiful on the Galapagos islands until the late 19th century, but were later hunted for their meat by sailors and fishermen to the point of extinction.

Their habitat furthermore suffered when goats were introduced from the mainland.

The differences in appearance between tortoises from different Galapagos islands were among the features which helped the British naturalist Charles Darwin formulate his theory of evolution.

Some 20,000 giant tortoises of other subspecies still live on the Galapagos.

White Sox take AL Central lead, add Youkilis

Associated Press Sports

updated 7:01 p.m. ET June 24, 2012

CHICAGO (AP) - A walk-off win, a nice spot in the standings and a new All-Star third basemen. It was a good day for the Chicago White Sox.

Pinch hitter Eduardo Escobar lined an RBI single in the 10th inning and the White Sox beat the Milwaukee Brewers 1-0 Sunday.

The victory moved the White Sox past Cleveland into the AL Central lead. Chicago also announced it had acquired infielder Kevin Youkilis and cash from Boston in a trade for infielder Brent Lillibridge and right-handed pitcher Zach Stewart.

Alejandro De Aza opened the White Sox 10th with a double off Manny Parra (0-2). Adam Dunn walked with one out and with Lillibridge due up Chicago needed a pinch-hitter. They turned to Escobar.

"You practice hard for that opportunity and once they called me in, I'm really happy that we were able to win," Escobar said through a translator.

White Sox general manager Kenny Williams said the Youkilis deal came together in the last 24 hours.

"I just got off the phone with him, he's very excited to join our club and he's got a little edge to him that I like," Williams said. "I can't tell you exactly what he said, but he wants to come in and prove some people wrong."

Youkilis is hitting just .233 this year with four homers and 14 RBIs, but is a career .287 hitter and a three-time all-star.

"I think it's good for him. A good change of scenery, I'm sure," White Sox first baseman Paul Konerko said.

For the second time in the three-game series, the White Sox and Brewers were scoreless after nine innings. Chicago got another brilliant outing from rookie left-hander Jose Quintana, whose father flew to Chicago from Colombia for the game.

Quintana allowed six hits in eight innings, walking none and striking out four.

"Really happy to have him out there," Quintana said through a translator. "It gave me more confidence and it's something that knowing he's there made me want to do the best I could even more."

Quintana's consecutive scoreless innings streak reached 16. He's now faced 97 consecutive batters without issuing a walk, the longest active streak in baseball.

Mike Fiers gave up five hits in 7 1-3 innings for the Brewers.

"It's OK. I've got to do my job and the runs we score is what we score," Fiers said. "If I get a loss, it doesn't matter to me. It's putting zeros up on the board and keeping my team in the game and getting a good result."

Brian Bruney (1-0) pitched a scoreless 10th for the win.

Despite the lack of scoring, the Brewers and White Sox each had chances.

Chicago executed an alert defensive play in the third when leadoff batter Norichika Aoki attempted to stretch a two-out double into a triple. Right fielder Alex Rios threw to second baseman Gordon Beckham, who made a nice relay to third baseman Orlando Hudson for the tag.

Hudson and Beckham both singled in the bottom of the third, but Dunn grounded out.

In the Brewers' fourth, Aramis Ramirez hit a two-out double and Corey Hart hit a drive to right field that a leaping Rios caught at the wall.

Chicago threatened in the sixth when Beckham singled, stole second and reached third on Dunn's deep fly. Konerko struck out swinging to end the inning.

Fiers was pulled in the eighth with White Sox runners at second and third with one out. Reliever Francisco Rodriguez struck out Beckham and Dunn.

The Brewers had runners on first and second in the ninth but Addison Reed got a strikeout and pinch-runner Nyjer Morgan was caught trying to steal third base. The White Sox loaded the bases in the bottom half but Jose Veras got Hudson to pop out.

Bruney walked two in the 10th but coaxed an infield popup by Carlos Gomez to end the inning.

NOTES: The White Sox ended 9-9 in interleague play while the Brewers closed at 6-12. ... The White Sox saluted the 40th anniversary of their 1972 AL West runner-up team in a pregame ceremony. That team went 87-67 and Dick Allen, the AL MVP, threw out the first pitch. ... It's been a frustrating run for manager Ron Roenicke and the Brewers, who haven't been above .500 since April. "Things just aren't clicking for us," he said. "Everything's just a little bit off."

Remove a Wall, removing a wall More Details about Remove a Wall, removing a wall here.

Walls are actually needed to build towers, houses and multi storey buildings. They are completed by making floors below and roofs above them. The purpose is to divide and create walkable spaces. By constructing walls of different lengths and sizes, you are actually able to construct different rooms in your houses. What is the need of Removing a Wall? In many situations, there is the need of removing an existing wall in order to redefine the space. For instance, if you want to increase the space of your bedroom by removing the wall of adjoining kids bedroom, you want to extend your bathroom or you want to make a large hall instead of separate dinning and drawing rooms of your home. Taking a Cost Estimate and Carrying the Process It is very important to have a proper market survey and take a rough cost estimate. You can take advice from any related contractor or engineer. Another important point under consideration is that the wall to be removed is either a bearing wall or a partition wall. A bearing wall is the one having roots in the structure whereas a partition wall is a light wall amongst the interiors whose sole purpose is to separate spaces. So, before removing a wall, consult the contractor or architect to make sure it is not a bearing wall which could harm structure of the house, and if it is a bearing wall, then how to deal with it. You can hire a contractor with reasonable rates to serve the purpose. You can save your cost by doing it yourself too but you need to be very careful while doing so. Be very careful in removing electrical outlets from the wall or take help from an electrician in this regard. You will need a hand sledge and a hammer to do it yourself. Don't forget to wear heavy gloves and a dust mask before starting the work. It is quite easy to relocate electrical cabling hidden in the walls like doorbell wires and television cables. There are a lot of more challenges sometimes hidden inside paneling or plaster like steam pipes, heating ducts, central vacuum piping, water supply lines, huge beams, support columns etc. No doubt, there is a solution to relocate any of these challenges but the trickier the task, more energy and cost is involved. Sometimes, it becomes very difficult to deal with bearing wall having support columns and massive beams. Likewise, a plumbing drain line of large size can create serious troubles for a plumber. Some latest technology is highly beneficial in spotting the clues, allowing seeing the top as well as the bottom of the wall in detail which is intended to be removed. It becomes easier to deal with any plumbing line exiting the top wall or any drain line exiting the floor easily beforehand. The toughest to deal with are support columns and hidden beams. We can therefore say that removing a wall is a simple, yet tactful work. You need to have proper information about all the features incorporated.
