CAIRO ? An Egyptian general appealed on Wednesday for unity between Christians and Muslims and denied that troops opened lethal fire during clashes between Christian protesters and military police that killed 25 and drew broad criticism of army tactics.

In the worst violence since Hosni Mubarak was ousted in February, armoured vehicles sped into a crowd on Sunday during a protest over an attack on a Coptic church. Online videos showed mangled bodies. Activists said some people were crushed by wheels.

?Egypt?s Copts are part of the fabric of this society. All Egyptians are citizens with the same rights and obligations,? said General Mahmoud Hegazy, a member of the army council that has ruled since Mubarak was deposed by a popular uprising.

?The power of the Egyptian people is in its unity. Egypt was never more in need of unity than it is now. The armed forces belong to the people, whether Christian or Muslim,? Hegazy told a news conference.

Amnesty International said some of the dead had bullet wounds. A doctor at a Christian hospital had told reporters on Monday that 14 of the 17 dead brought in to his hospital had been hit by bullets.

?The armed forces would never and has never opened fire on the people,? Hegazy said.

The army was praised when it took control after Mubarak was ousted for its restraint in handling protests. But anger at the military has mounted as the transition to civilian rule has dragged on and for what activists say are increasingly tough tactics.

?The martyrs who died in Maspero had Christians among them,? Hegazy said of the violence on Sunday in the neighbourhood of Cairo around the headquarters of state television.

Christians turned their fury on the army. They said protesters responded with stones and other projectiles only after the military used heavy-handed tactics. Military and other vehicles were torched in the violence.

The presidential election is more than one year away but is never too early to learn about the candidate's positions on matters related to education and special education. As it appears likely that Mitt Romney is the likely Republican candidate his positions bear particular scrutiny. In a recent newspaper interview Romney made the following statements:

"In a Romney administration, he said, the federal responsibility for public education from kindergarten through Grade 12 would be limited to providing data to the states.

?The federal government being a funder of state and local education is not in my opinion a necessary responsibility,? he said.

Special education ?is a choice we can make, but it doesn't necessarily strike me as a responsibility of the federal government. It could be a responsibility of state governments.?

He said, however, that the federal government traditionally ?picks up some portion of funding for special education, and I'm not proposing eliminating that or shifting that to the states. But it's not constitutionally required that the federal government deals with special education or other education programs.?

While these statements are not clear at all, and he seems to be taking the position that little will change in terms of the role of the federal government relative to the states on special education, he leaves open the possibility of wholesale changes with each state having responsibility for special education. On issues related to funding, even in this one interview he waffles from no federal funding for education to possibly continuing "some portion" of funding for special education. No funding to states for special education, if that is where he ultimately came out on the issue, would be nothing less than catastrophic!? Bottom line for me is that on one who cares about special education could not possibly feel confident or rest easy, if Mitt Romney were to make it to the White House. Let's also remember that the next reauthorization of IDEA will likely come up during the next presidential term.

Ubisoft has released a new video today for Assassin?s Creed: Revelations?that shows one of the new additions to Ezio?s arsenal ? bombs.

In the past, the only bombs that Ezio utilized were smoke bombs. That will change in Assassin?s Creed Revelations. It seems that the Ottomans have something new to show to the longtime Assassin. Aside from the usual smoke bombs, Ezio will have access to bombs that distract civilians and guards, slow down and even kill enemies.

But wait, there is more. While it may seem that the previous bombs may be acquired or bought, there are other types of bombs that can be created. The video shows Ezio creating his own custom bomb by combining the ingredients of a shell, gunpowder and shrapnel. Each combination creates a new type of bomb to aid the Assassin. Lord Falconer?s Commission on Assisted Dying is due to report this autumn and, given its composition, is likely to recommend that a bill be brought forward to legalise assisted suicide for mentally competent adults who are terminally ill with so-called ?robust safeguards?. Dignity in Dying, the former Voluntary Euthanasia Society, is planning fresh assaults on the Parliaments of Westminster, Scotland and the Isle of Man and hopes to build on any momentum the Commssion report might provide. ?

And yet, having witnessed first-hand the deaths of patients, friends and relatives, I remain convinced that the law should not be changed to allow either physician-assisted suicide (PAS) or voluntary euthanasia.

I have only twice been asked to end the life of a patient, and on both occasions the request was withdrawn quickly as soon as the symptoms prompting it were relieved! Requests for euthanasia are in fact extremely rare when patients? physical, psychological and spiritual needs are properly met; in general most patients adjust their expectations during a terminal illness and become thankful for the quality of life that they have. We have an excellent tradition of palliative care in this country; and putting increased resources into research and making good palliative care more readily available must always be a key priority.

Requests for assisted dying are usually motivated by fear of ?loss of control?, and yet paradoxically legalising voluntary euthanasia or PAS would actually undermine patients? freedom. Requests for euthanasia are rarely free and voluntary. Vulnerable people very often feel a burden on family, society and a struggling health service and feel pressure, whether real or imagined, to request early death. A third of people requesting PAS in Oregon, USA, where it was legalised in 1997, currently do so because they feel themselves to be a burden to others.

Hard cases make bad laws. A change in the law to allow euthanasia or PAS would give doctors power that could be too easily abused and would threaten the trust necessary for the doctor-patient relationship to function.

The experience in the Netherlands (where over 1,000 patients are killed by doctors each year without their consent) demonstrates that progression to involuntary euthanasia would be a real danger should the law be changed here. Furthermore, one out of five attempts at PAS fails leaving the doctor to step in with a lethal injection.

PAS and euthanasia cannot be separated and ethically they are equivalent as the doctor?s intention is the same in each case. To protect the vulnerable majority it is right that a tiny minority of insistent patients forego a ?right? that the European Court of Human Rights, in considering the case of Diane Pretty in 2002, has said they don?t have any way.

Legalising PAS and euthanasia would split the medical profession. 75% of doctors have already indicated that they would not participate in euthanasia if it is legalised, and a change in the law, as in the case of abortion, will lead to doctors who want to abide by the Hippocratic Oath (by not practising PAS or euthanasia) being excluded from specialities where euthanasia becomes part of the ?full range of services?.

Euthanasia legislation would have a devastating effect throughout the National Health Service on already critical levels of staffing, where we are reliant especially on many overseas nurses from Muslim, Christian and other faith backgrounds who are strongly opposed to the practice. Furthermore it would put Britain out on a limb from the international community. The World Medical Association recently reaffirmed its strong opposition to both PAS and euthanasia and the British Medical Association and all medical Royal Colleges remain strongly opposed to a change in the law.

In 1994 a Lords? Select Committee wisely and courageously rejected any change in the law. They concluded ?that it would be virtually impossible to ensure that all acts of euthanasia were truly voluntary and that any liberalisation of the law in the United Kingdom could not be abused?. British Parliaments have on the basis of public safety since rejected moves to change the law three times, in 2006, 2009 and 2010.

Euthanasia and PAS are unnecessary (because alternative treatments exist), dangerous (because they undermine autonomy) and morally wrong (being contrary to all historical codes of medical ethics and the Judeo-Christian ethic on which our laws are based).

Nobody has a ?right? to be killed by a doctor, Britain does not need PAS or euthanasia and no society could ever control them. As professionals and society we need instead to get on with the task of working for that genuinely ?gentle and easy death? all patients deserve. Real ?death with dignity? means facing the end with courage, hope and serenity with balanced medical intervention and effective palliative care.

PORT-AU-PRINCE (Reuters) ? Haiti's Senate approved Garry Conille as prime minister on Tuesday, endorsing President Michel Martelly's third nominee for the post in a move many hope will boost reconstruction efforts in the earthquake-ravaged nation.

The Senate's confirmation of Conille, 45, a medical doctor and U.N. development expert, followed approval from the lower house of parliament last month.

It was Martelly's third attempt to install a new head of government. His first two nominees were rejected by lawmakers in June and August. This had raised concerns among diplomats and donors who said the poor Caribbean state desperately needed a working government to rebuild from a devastating 2010 earthquake.

Both houses of Haiti's parliament are dominated by senators and deputies whose parties fielded rival candidates to Martelly in a turbulent two-round presidential election that he finally won in a March run-off vote.

Conille's approval in the Senate, after a prolonged debate, came by a 17-3 vote. Nine lawmakers abstained, according to Senate President Rodolphe Joazile.

Haiti, known for decades of dictatorship, corruption and instability, faces a huge reconstruction task after last year's earthquake, which killed tens of thousands of people, and a lingering cholera epidemic that has claimed more than 6,000 lives.

WORKED WITH BILL CLINTON

Conille, who has a long career with the United Nations specializing in development and health issues, brings useful recent experience to the post, having worked as chief of staff to former U.S. President Bill Clinton in the latter's role as special U.N. Haiti envoy.

This role had involved helping to coordinate the huge international humanitarian response to the Haitian quake and working with donors on the delivery of aid.

Haitian authorities estimate the January 2010 earthquake killed more than 300,000 people and wrecked much of the capital, Port-au-Prince.

Pressing tasks for the new government include effectively fighting the cholera epidemic. It must also try to provide shelter for tens of thousands of earthquake survivors who are still living in makeshift tent camps vulnerable to hurricanes and floods.

"The country needs a government," said Senator Wencesclass Lambert, a member of the majority Inite party, who cast his vote in support of Conille on Tuesday night and called his approval "an important step" toward national recovery.

"There are so many people suffering," Lambert said. "International donors are reluctant to release funds if a new government is not in place."

In a final hurdle toward confirmation in his post, both houses of parliament will have to approve Conille's proposed plan for government.

But that is viewed largely as a formality, parliamentary sources said. They said Conille was now expected to be sworn into office swiftly, after addressing the Senate and the House separately to outline his plan as early as sometime later this week.

NHC: Jova could become hurricane over Pacific (AP)

MIAMI ? Forecasters say Tropical Storm Jova is expected to become a hurricane in the next day or so over the eastern Pacific Ocean.

Earlier Friday, Irwin strengthened to become the eighth hurricane of the eastern Pacific season.

Late Friday afternoon, both storms remained far from land off the coast of Mexico.

Irwin was moving west-northwest at about 6 mph (10 kph), but models show the storm could take a turn back toward the east and land. Jova was moving northwest at about 8 mph (13 kph). Models show it also could take a turn toward the northeast and make landfall sometime next week over Mexico.

In the Atlantic, Philippe was downgraded to a tropical storm from a hurricane. It was far off the U.S. coast and not expected to threaten land.

Wall Street edges up after U.S. data, Europe hopes (Reuters)

NEW YORK (Reuters) ? U.S. stocks floated higher on Wednesday as stronger-than-expected U.S. economic data and signs that officials were moving forward to prop up struggling European banks reassured nervous investors.

European finance ministers expressed a new sense of urgency about the region's financial crisis and appeared ready to prepare a plan to recapitalize banks.

The move up followed a late rally Tuesday after European officials said they would act to safeguard banks.

The deepening debt crisis in Europe has been among the biggest bearish factors for investors, along with signs a recovery in the already weak U.S. economy was stalling.

"It was very clear that sentiment was extremely weak and needed some support, and they found support in news that EU officials were looking for ways to recapitalize the banks," said Andrew Wilkinson, chief economic strategist at Miller Tabak & Co in New York.

At the same time, the day's U.S. data "doesn't suggest ... that more selling is called for at this point."

The Dow Jones industrial average (.DJI) was up 4.39 points, or 0.04 percent, at 10,813.10. The Standard & Poor's 500 Index (.SPX) rose 2.55 points, or 0.23 percent, at 1,126.50. The Nasdaq Composite Index (.IXIC) rose 18.67 points, or 0.78 percent, at 2,423.49.

The U.S. private sector added 91,000 jobs in September, according to the ADP National Employment Report, topping forecasts and increasing optimism about Friday's non-farm payrolls report from the Labor Department.

Data from the Institute for Supply Management showed the U.S. services sector expanded slightly more than expected in September.

Materials, energy and industrials -- ones tied to economic growth -- were the top-performing stock sectors. The S&P materials index (.GSPM) was up 1.6 percent.

The Nasdaq outperformed the other two major indexes, led by gains in Research in Motion Ltd (RIMM.O), up 13.5 percent at $23.85 on takeover speculation. On Tuesday, the BlackBerry maker fell below $20 for the first time in almost six years.

Over the last six sessions, the S&P has fallen 10 percent, and on Tuesday briefly fell 20 percent from its recent high into bear market territory.

Investors who bet against the market were forced to cover short positions as equities shifted late in the session.

Big reversals late in a session are often not good predictors of direction. Since 2001, there have been nine days when the market rebounded in the last hour after a 1 percent loss. In eight of those sessions, stocks fell the next day, according to Bespoke Investment Group of Harrison, New York.

Volume at midday was 4.6 billion, with advancers beating decliners on the New York Stock Exchange by about four-to-three, while on the Nasdaq winners topped losers by about 13 to 10.

Digital archives to be presented at Frankfurt Book Fair

Springer Science+Business Media has started its extensive digitization project, Springer Book Archives (SBA). The SBA initiative will include nearly all books that have been published since the 1840s. Springer expects that the book archives will contain around 65,000 titles. Titles include academically and historically unique works by Albert Einstein, Niels Bohr, Sir John Eccles, Lise Meitner, Werner Siemens, and Rudolf Diesel, to name just a few. The works in the digital archives will be available on the company's platform SpringerLink just like all other Springer books, which have routinely been published in electronic and print versions since 2005. When this mammoth project is completed at the end of 2012, Springer will be able to offer more than 100,000 eBooks on www.springerlink.com.

Extensive research was necessary in the run-up to this monumental project to obtain the rights to digitize these books. Springer proactively contacts authors and copyright holders to clarify the issue of royalties for these digital editions.

Around 70 percent of the books in Springer Book Archives are in English, nearly 30 percent are in German with some Dutch-language titles. The ratio between scientific STM titles and professional literature is similar. These figures clearly reflect the company's history over the years. The books in Springer's book archives comprise a total of 17 different imprints, including German economics books by Gabler, the U.S. information technology publisher Apress and the U.S. non-fiction imprint Copernicus. Medical books account for the largest share of the book archives, at over 20 percent.

Elizabeth Hurley engaged to cricketer Shane Warne (Reuters)

LOS ANGELES (Reuters) ? British model and actress Elizabeth Hurley is engaged to retired Australian cricketer Shane Warne, the couple confirmed via Twitter.

Hurley was photographed by British newspapers wearing an engagement ring on Saturday at the Dunhill Links Championship golf tournament in Scotland, in which Warne was participating.

Hurley, 46 and Warne, 42, thanked well-wishers on Saturday via Twitter and Warne tweeted on Sunday he proposed "privately" and it "was very romantic."

The couple have been quietly dating since late 2010, after Hurley separated from her husband of four years, Indian textile businessman Arun Nayar. They divorced in June.

The "Gossip Girl" actress famously dated British actor Hugh Grant for more than 10 years, and also has a son from a previous relationship with film producer Steve Bing.

Warne, a former international cricket star and specialist spin bowler, is divorced and has three children.

Rhapsody announces plans to acquire Napster

Details are fairly light at the moment, but Rhapsody has just announced that it plans to acquire Napster, and that the deal is expected to be complete as soon as the end of November. In a statement, Rhapsody president Jon Irwin said that the deal "will further extend Rhapsody's lead over our competitors in the growing on-demand music market," and that "this is a 'go big or go home' business, so our focus is on sustainably growing the company." According to Rhapsody, the company will acquire Napster's subscribers and "certain other assets" under the agreement, and Best Buy (Napster's current owner) will receive a minority stake in the company. The legendary Napster is now part of Rhapsody. On Monday, Rhapsody International announced it was purchasing its rival, currently owned by Best Buy. Details of the deal were not released.

Best Buy will retain a minority stake in Rhapsody. Both Rhapsody and Napster were early into the game of subscriber-based online music services, both influenced the field, but both are seeing their positions challenged by newcomers.

Spotify, Facebook Moving In

In 2008, Best Buy bought Napster for $121 million, a point at which the online service's subscriber base was rapidly dropping. Rhapsody, co-owned by Real Networks and MTV Networks, is facing a new landscape that now includes Apple's iTunes, Amazon's music service, and smaller startups such as Spotify, Rdio, and others.

Spotify, a U.K.-based service that was launched in the U.S. in July, has become one of Rhapsody's most aggressive competitors. Users can listen to ad-supported music for free, or opt for a subscription-based, ad-free service. Spotify also recently announced a tight integration with Facebook.

In that move, Spotify is requiring every new member to also be a member of Facebook. While such a dependence on the social-networking giant has raised eyebrows, Spotify has reported that it is adding 250,000 new members each day since the deal was announced. That service now says it has 2 million paying customers over eight countries. Rhapsody, by contrast, has about 800,000 subscribers.

Rhapsody is also involved with the new Facebook Music services, although not with the kind of integration that Spotify has. Other music partners with Facebook, which could become the dominant platform for social-music listening, include Earbits, iHeartRadio, Rdio, Mog and Slacker. Facebook, with 750 million members worldwide, could dwarf any other platform for new music.

Napster Brand Continues?

In a statement, Rhapsody President Jon Irwin said the deal would bring "Napster's subscribers and robust IP portfolio to Rhapsody as we execute on our strategy to expand our business via direct acquisition of members and distribution deals."

Irwin added that the online music business is a "'go big or go home'" environment. It is not known if the Napster brand will continue in any form.

When Best Buy purchased Napster, the service had about 700,000 subscribers, a customer service platform, mobile apps, and an online store containing DRM-less MP3s. It also said it had the largest music selection of any online service. A new version of the service was launched in 2009.

Napster began life in 1999 as a peer-to-peer site that offered MP3 files to share, a revolutionary move that helped jump-start the online music scene -- and resulted in a variety of copyright infringement suits from record companies that led to its temporary shutdown. It reopened after it was purchased by Bertlesmann AG in 2002.

Rhapsody, launched in 2001, was spun off into a separate company by Real Networks in 2010. It retained 51 percent, and sold the remainder to MTV Networks.

Maureen's career in dietetics spans over 30 years and began in clinical dietetics and out-patient education at UC Davis Medical Center in Sacramento, California. She provided nutrition education to people of all ages, especially diabetes education for children, pregnant women and adults.

She has passion for providing reality-based, nutrition education to help people enjoy a wide variety of nutrient-rich foods to lead a healthy life. She was delighted to recently discover that her commitment to family meals helped shape healthy attitudes and habits for her two teenage sons.

I had the good fortune to attend what registered dietitians call FNCE (pronounced ?fen see?) in San Diego September 24 through September 27.? The official name is the Food & Nutrition Conference & Expo ? a national gathering of the members of the American Dietetic Association.

One session was of particular interest to me, The Family Meal: Reclaiming the Dinner Table. I?ve long had a passion for the importance of family meals. I am one of five children and we had a family dinner every night. It was my mother?s dedication to preparing family meals and the interest in food and nutrition sparked by my high school home economics teacher that inspired me to become a registered dietitian! Since the importance of family meals is a core value for me, I was excited to attend a special session on this topic at FNCE.

Here is what I learned in a nutshell:

• Dining as a family can create an environment for parents to lead by example for their children. Children who eat with their families consume more fruits, vegetables, milk and milk products compared to those who eat fewer family meals. I was thrilled to learn that young adults who were raised eating regular family meals consume more vegetables (there is hope yet for my teenagers!)

• Adults also report that eating as a family is a positive portion of their day. Mealtime creates a feeling of togetherness and family cohesion. The concept of family meals does not exclude single-parent homes or couples without children. The routine associated with meals can provide a protective value for some of the risks associated with single-parent homes. For couples, the routine of sitting down together carves out time for each other and creates work schedule boundaries creating a balance between work and personal life.

• There is an association between family meal frequency and lower rates of obesity. However, while the meals are more nutritious (especially when prepared and eaten at home) they are not necessarily lower in calorie. Family meals consumed while distracted (watching television, taking phone calls, reading the mail) may actually increase food consumption.

Two surprising tidbits:

• Low income families more commonly have meals together than higher income families.

• If a family thinks they should eat a high quality diet, then they will regardless of their income level.

My long time value for balanced family meals (balanced meals include foods from each food group) and the need for nutrition education was confirmed.
