Asteroid Miners May Set the Stage for Space Colonization

On Tuesday, the founders of Planetary Resources held a press conference at the Museum of Flight in Seattle to announce a new megamillion-dollar plan to use commercially built robotic ships to travel to the asteroid belt to mine for valuable minerals including platinum and gold. "As we move beyond the bounds of Earth to a universe that is full of resources, we can finally bring those materials back to Earth," said speaker Peter Diamandis, cofounder of Planetary Resources.

Disaster Recovery Planning | Invision Kansas City

Plan for disaster nowA thorough IT disaster recovery plan can help ensure business continuity after disruptions?large and small.

It is human nature to think it will ?never happen to me,? but disruptive events?such as power failures, IT system crashes and natural disasters?can and do happen all the time. Yes, your time is short and there?s a lot on your plate, so preparing for something that seems unlikely to happen is not high on your priority list.

However, according to the SBA, 40 to 60 percent of small businesses close for good after experiencing a disaster. Now imagine, for a moment, how your business would continue after a disaster. We?re in tornado alley, so let?s skip the earthquake and tsunami scenarios and picture the?aftermath of a direct hit by a tornado. Your paper files are found strewn as far as Columbia, Mo., and your server and workstations are crushed and rain-soaked.

First of all, how will you communicate with employees and clients? Were the only copies of their contact information now in Columbia or on that ruined workstation? How will your employees continue to get the job done without the essential tools and information they need?

It?s not just comparatively rare natural disasters you have to worry about. Much more likely will be that mere power failure, thanks to road construction down the block. Even a day or two without access to electronic information can have serious consequences for your business.

While business continuity and disaster recovery actually encompass much more beyond IT concerns, we?ll focus on the factors and steps you need to take to ensure your data and IT systems can be quickly restored.

Backup, backup and backup

The most important part of any IT disaster recovery situation is having a good, recent, restorable backup of your data. Most companies understand how important backups are, but not all have recognized the need to keep some or all of those backups at an off-site location. It can be as easy as taking one or two backup tapes home with you each week. If that seems like too much to remember, there are numerous options for backing up the data to an alternate site. Having more than one backup offsite is also important in the event that some or all of the data in?one of the backups is corrupt or missing.

When planning, implementing and periodically auditing your recovery plans, take the opportunity to ensure that all the data you would need to recover is included in the backup set. Some information kept on local machines, such as files on your desktop or shortcuts to important websites like your outside payroll service, are often not included in backups. These are often files that are frequently accessed and would therefore be important to restore in a disaster recovery situation.

Email

Contingencies for recovering email have improved greatly in the last couple of years. In addition to needing a good working backup, consider adding the services of an online provider that will act as a buffer for your email. In the event your system can no longer send or receive email, these services will kick in and collect email while your system is down. Users can log into this alternate service to send and receive email while the system is being restored.

And don?t forget about?

There are a couple of often overlooked components of disaster recovery that can save significant time in the restore process. Having backups of the configurations to the router and firewall that sit on your network will significantly speed up the recovery time. Depending on the type of system restore you are performing, it may also be necessary to have copies of the licenses and software keys if reinstalling the software is required. You should also have an up-to-date list of all your vendors and their contact information. These are the companies you would?turn to first in the event you needed to restore your business after a loss. A copy of this list should also be kept off-site and accessible by more than one person.

Make a checklist

Think about what you would need to start your business now, from day one. That?s the beginning of the checklist you need to create for disaster recovery. Get it down on paper and make sure you review it from time to time to keep it up to date. In a catastrophic event, you can?t rely on your memory to come up with all the things you would need to restore your business. Run through the checklist from start to finish and note the intended result of each step. You should end up with a pretty good snapshot of what your company looks like today. Here are some questions to help get you started on your own checklist:

  • Prioritize your IT systems and data in terms of time-to-restore

What has to be back up and running within hours?

What has to be restored within 24 hours?

What can remain down beyond the first few days?

  • Prioritize your backup system so the most critical data is backed up as frequently as every hour. Other types of data can be backed up less often.
  • Can you access your system and data remotely in case you can?t work onsite?
  • How will you contact and establish ongoing communication with employees?
  • Is it worth investing in a generator to keep electronics running?
  • Do you have an inventory of every component of your network and where it is located?
  • Do you have a snapshot of your system and all the applications, including configuration, running on it?
  • Would you need a back-up internet service provider or telecom provider?
  • How quickly can your vendors find and ship replacement components?

Red June Releases?Beauty Will Come? on June 5th: Appalachian Rooted Americana

Like their namesake heirloom apple variety,?Red June?has strong roots in the Appalachian tradition while constantly forging new ground in Americana music.?RedJuneMusic.com

?

Red June Red June Releases ?Beauty Will Come? on June 5th: Appalachian Rooted Americana Asheville, NC??Red June?is an acoustic trio based in Asheville, NC who creates and performs beautifully distilled Americana music. They are making waves with their dynamic, yet refined sound that features striking 3-part harmonies, tasteful instrumental work and honest, soulful songwriting that seamlessly blends old-time, bluegrass, roots rock and traditional country music.?Poised to release their second full-length album,?Beauty Will Come,?on June 5th, 2012, listeners can expect an album to fall in love with. ?The record is a brilliant integration of old-time, bluegrass, and beyond, and feels like a holding of hands? the blend is beautiful,?says singer/songwriter Kari Sickenberger of Polecat Creek.

Red June is made up of?Will Straughan?on resonator guitar, vocals and guitar,?John Cloyd Miller?on mandolin, vocals and guitar, and?Natalya Weinstein?on fiddle and vocals. The three have been longtime friends and first jammed together at a pickin? party in Asheville in 2005. In late 2008 they formed Red June and went on to release their debut album?Remember Me Well?in 2010.?Remember Me Well?was voted the?#1?regional release of 2010 by the listeners of the southeast?s premier independent radio station WNCW. ?For those who seek well-crafted songwriting and impeccable musicianship, you just can?t go wrong with the acoustic instrumentation and powerful harmonies of Red June?s?Remember Me Well. It?s an exciting debut from a collective of outstanding performers,? writes Chris Mateer in No Depression.

Beauty Will Come?was recorded and mixed in late 2011 at?Hollow Reed Arts Studio?in Asheville by musician/engineer extraordinaire Chris Rosser, who co-produced the record along with Red June. The innovative young graphic artist,?Peter Gaillard, designed the album art using an old lithograph of a Mourning Cloak butterfly. The image resonates with the album?s themes of transition, hope, loss and renewal.

More personal than their debut album,?Beauty Will Come?begins with an uplifting song by Straughan titled ?These Old Chains.? ?Every Hard Mile?, by Miller, is an expansive song featuring the band?s signature 3-part harmonies. Track three is an exciting old-time inspired fiddle tune written by Weinstein & Miller titled ?Piney Branch Breakdown.? Straughan then brings us ?All that the Fall Leaves,? a playful waltz about the search for true love.

?Bittersweet? is a pensive song from Weinstein, and is the song from which the album title was drawn. Next is the only cover song on the record, a gospel a capella originally recorded by Ralph Stanley called ?I?m Willing to Try.? Following, is John?s nod to his bluegrass heritage with ?Cloud of Dust.? Straughan?s beautiful and powerful ?Soul?s Repair? follows and Miller then brings us the light-hearted ?Foolish Me.? Next is a set of Irish reels, ?Scott?s/Connors? penned by Straughan and named after his young guitar student and student?s brother. The final track on the album ?Red Sky of Morn? is a collaborative song written by all three band members along with Laurelyn Dossett.

Red June is already well underway to becoming a longtime southern favorite, akin to the Appalachian heirloom apple variety from which they gleaned their name. Ripening early with a full balance of flavors, Red June is touring across the country and has performed at the renowned Music City Roots live radio show in Nashville as well as the Bristol Rhythm & Roots Reunion, Shakori Hills Grassroots Festival and Suwannee Springfest. They will also be performing three days at the 25th anniversary MerleFest in April of 2012. As acclaimed songwriter & musician Joe Newberry says, ?Red June is one of our truly great bands. They never fail to talk the talk and walk the walk.??Red June is sure to capture eyes and ears with their new release,?Beauty Will Come.

Zimmerman sorry for shooting Trayvon; bail set at $150,000

Trayvon Martin's parents saw their son's killer face-to-face for the first time in court on Friday, where George Zimmerman took the stand to say he was "sorry for the loss of your son." A judge set bail at $150,000. NBC's Kerry Sanders reports.

By Becky Bratu, msnbc.com

A Florida judge set bail Friday at $150,000 for the release of George Zimmerman, who apologized on the stand to Trayvon Martin?s parents for the loss of their child.

?I wanted to say I am sorry for the loss of your son,? Zimmerman said.

Zimmerman, who was wearing a suit and had chains that wrapped around his waist and connected to handcuffs, said that at the time of the shooting he did not know how old Martin was or whether he was armed. He also said he previously had asked police and his attorneys to tell Martin?s family that he was sorry.

His comments were the most robust to date about the incident, which set off a wave of protests and an examination of race relations in the country. Zimmerman, whose father is white and mother is Hispanic,?is charged with second-degree murder in the death of 17-year-old Martin, who?was black.

Following the hearing, Natalie Jackson, an attorney for the Martin family, said Zimmerman's apology was "insulting to the family."

"This is the most unmeaningful apology we've ever seen in our entire lives," Jackson said, according to an Orlando Sentinel reporter.

Judge Kenneth R. Lester, Jr. said Zimmerman would not be released immediately and that he would be monitored electronically via GPS. The terms of the bond include a curfew and?no alcohol or guns. Also,?Zimmerman must be in touch with authorities every three days. The judge wouldn?t rule on whether Zimmerman would be allowed to leave the state.

Zimmerman?s attorney had asked for a $15,000 bond, citing his client?s family?s modest financial holdings. The prosecution said Zimmerman should not be granted a bond, but if he is, it should be for $1 million.

Speaking publicly for the first time since her husband shot the unarmed teenager in February, Zimmerman?s wife of almost five years, Shellie Nicole Zimmerman, said her husband poses no danger to the community.

?Absolutely he is not a violent person,? Shellie Zimmerman said. She spoke to the court by phone because she said she has received hate mail and is concerned for her safety. She did not report the mail to the police, she admitted upon cross-examination by Prosecutor Bernie De La Rionda.

Zimmerman, who is a nursing student four weeks shy of graduation, said she would ?absolutely? ensure that her husband would be present in court for his trial if he were to be released on bail. She added that her husband has been living in hiding since the shooting.

NBC's chief legal correspondent Savannah Guthrie hypothesizes Zimmerman's attorneys may be speaking to a larger audience, including potential jurors who could be watching, in arranging for George Zimmerman to speak in court on Friday.

She was among a handful of witnesses testifying at the hearing, including Zimmerman?s mother and father and an investigator for the state attorney?s office, who was one of the signatories of the probable-cause affidavit that accused Zimmerman of ?profiling? Martin.

Dale Gilbreath, the investigator, said he couldn't remember who came up with the use of the word "profiling" in the document.

Gilbreath added that Zimmerman had two lacerations on his head, which could have been caused by impact with cement.

Zimmerman claims self-defense in the shooting. ABC News says it has?obtained an exclusive photo of the back of Zimmerman's head, which appears bloody and may help substantiate his claims.

?Zimmerman?s father, Robert, echoed his daughter-in-law?s testimony, saying his son is ?absolutely not violent.?

?I?ve never known him to be violent at all unless he was provoked, and then he would turn the other cheek,? Robert told the court. ?He?s been honest his whole life.?

The defendant?s father, a former court magistrate, added his son has always been interested in criminal justice.

George Zimmerman, who has been charged with second degree murder in the death of Trayvon Martin, takes the stand at his own bond hearing at the Seminole County Courthouse in Sanford, Fla. Zimmerman tells Martin's parents he's "sorry for the loss" of their son.

Zimmerman?s mother?s testimony painted the portrait of a man concerned with the community he lived in, who was ?protective? of people and children. Gladys Zimmerman testified that the Sanford mayor had recognized her son for his efforts in mobilizing the community in the case of a homeless man who had been beaten. She also added that her son mentored two African-American children in Orlando and visited them often despite her objection that they lived in a ?dangerous? area.

On Thursday night, Zimmerman reached out to ask to speak to Martin?s parents, but they rejected that request, another attorney for the family, Benjamin Crump, told NBC Miami.

The family did not want to talk with Zimmerman?because they felt?he had never publicly apologized for what happened to their son and they thought it was inappropriate to do so at the 11th hour before his bond hearing, according to Crump.

NBC Miami and The Associated Press contributed to this report.?

From the Android Forums: AT&T vs. Verizon in Europe

    Europa

grunt0300 asks in the Android Central forums,

    ATT vs Verizon?
Just wondering which provider works best in Europe?

    Thanks.

AT&T is a GSM carrier, and that means SIM cards. AT&T also uses mostly compatible 3G bands with the continent, so it's easier -- on the surface.

The reality is both AT&T and Verizon lock phones to their network (if you're using an unlocked handset you probably wouldn't be asking this one), meaning they won't work anywhere else. This is simple enough to fix on an AT&T phone, but you'll need to enlist a third party to help, or root and monkey with things a little bit. Verizon is a CDMA carrier, but they do offer world phones that take a SIM card for use outside the U.S. Like an AT&T phone, you'll need to network (or SIM) unlock it to use a pre-paid SIM card in Europe.

Of course both carriers will sell you an international plan, complete with expensive rates and restrictions. Verizon will even rent you a world phone for a couple bucks a day if you need one. It's a matter of how much you're willing to spend for the convenience, and to keep your same phone number. You can walk into the carrier's shop, tell them what you need to do, and they will take care of everything for you, and for a fee.

Our recommendation is to get the SIM unlock and pick up a pre-paid card from a kiosk or machine at the airport. If you're using a travel agent, they can help, too. In this case, unless you already have a Verizon world phone, AT&T is your best bet.

Bella KillerKeys brings desktops shortcuts and control to iOS for $20, we go hands-on (video)

    http://www.engadget.com/2012/04/18/bella-killerkeys-for-ios-hands-on/

Creative types working their magic on Windows may already be familiar with KillerKeys, a desktop app that brings push-button control to most Adobe apps, Microsoft Office, Sony Vegas and a few others, letting you tap a preset action rather than digging through a multi-layer menu or remembering hundreds of keyboard shortcuts -- if you use any of these apps as part of your workflow, the $10 (and up) investment certainly seems to be worthwhile. Now, Bella, the company behind KillerKeys, is bringing the tool to iOS (the iPad, more specifically), letting you tap your intentions on your tab, rather than using the mouse to click around the desktop.

You can group buttons by function, and the panel adjusts automatically to match the current app -- there's also an application launcher available at the bottom corners of the display, which helps to minimize your mouse time. To that end, you'll also find an on-screen trackpad (which unfortunately wasn't functional during the company's demo at NAB), and once it's enabled you'll be able to reposition your pointer from the tablet, letting you hide that cumbersome mouse. Initially, the app will only be available for iOS when it ships next month, though an Android version is in the works, as is a Mac OS version of KillerKeys, which should launch with the iPad app. The mobile application will set you back $10, and you'll also need to pick up a copy of KillerKeys, which ranges in price from $10 for a home and student addition to $90 for the whole shebang. Check out the hands-on demo after the break.
