Hooked on the BRZ

BRZopen

Everyone knows the feeling. Maybe it was a fantastic golf shot, or maybe it was the way you dominated a mountain bike trail. It could be anything, really, but the sensation is the same?that moment when everything came together. The moment replays in your head for weeks until it?s all you can think about; it nags at you until you get back out there and find that elusive purity once more. Well, I?ve got one of those moments stuck in my head, and the culprit is the 2013 Subaru BRZ.

?

The global launch of the BRZ recently took place in Cannes, France, and for a series of weeks journalists from all over the world journeyed to the haute French town on the Mediterranean coast to drive a convoy of blue and silver BRZs along the Route Napoleon, a narrow, treacherous, and absolutely thrilling stretch of pavement that winds through the Maritime Alps in France?s Provence region.

?

BRZ reviews have been mostly stellar (including our own here and here), so I was giddy to see for myself. The Route Napoleon just happened to be the perfect road to experience the car?s telepathic handling and addictive gearbox. Within a few minutes behind the wheel, everything began to sync. Where exactly I entered the zone, I?m not sure. But as I snapped around curves, shot through holes carved from solid stone, and scooted under rocky overhangs, I suddenly realize that this wasn?t just driving?this was something else. And I liked it a lot. The sport seat cradled me perfectly, the guttural groan of the rev-happy 200-hp FA20 boxer four grew on me with each mile, the electrically assisted steering felt natural and provided great feedback, and when pushed hard, the car reacted to my commands in perfect unison, correcting any mistakes with a fleeting shot of stability control.

?

This is not to say the BRZ is perfect. Parts of the interior are a bit cheap, the +2 part of this car is useless for adults, the torque flattens out and leaves you on the border between second and third, and you need an oil derrick in your backyard if you plan to drive this car at the limit all the time (is there any other way?). Overall, though, the faults are few and nearly forgetten by how stupid fun the BRZ is to drive.?
?

So here I am. It?s been just over a week since my test drive, and I?m sitting at my desk on the 23rd floor of the Hearst Tower in the middle of Manhattan daydreaming about driving a BRZ?but not in France. No, I want to take a crack at the hilly West Virginia country roads I grew up with. I?d just keep driving until I found that rhythm again. I don?t think it would take long.
