Cells may spare kidney transplant rejection drugs

(AP) ? An experimental technique seems to be freeing some kidney transplant patients from having to take anti-rejection drugs.

Researchers transplanted certain cells from the kidney donor's bone marrow along with the new organ. Five of eight transplant recipients who tried the method so far were off immune-suppressing medication up to 2? years later, the researchers reported Wednesday.

The preliminary results were considered important enough to be published in the journal Science Translational Medicine even though the study still is under way, because the technique worked for patients who didn't have well-matched or related donors.

The idea is that if a sort of twin immune system takes root and lasts, it can allow the patient's body to accept the foreign organ and not attack it, said study co-author Dr. Suzanne Ildstad of the University of Lousville. Scientists call it chimerism.

"The most reliable indicator of really being successful at taking someone off immune-suppressing drugs is durable chimerism," says Ildstad, who teamed with doctors at Chicago's Northwestern Memorial Hospital for the research.

Transplant recipients usually must take multiple immune-suppressing pills for life to prevent rejection of their new organ. Those drugs cause lots of side effects, such as raising the risk of cancer and kidney damage.

Other scientists are attempting to tap bone marrow to induce immune tolerance, with varying success.

Ildstad's approach transfuses a special mix of bone marrow cells including blood-producing stem cells and another type named "facilitating cells" that are thought vital for a successful transplant. She filters out still other cells that can become too aggressive and cause a life-threatening disorder named graft-versus-host disease.

Transplant recipients had radiation and chemotherapy, not destroying their own bone marrow but tamping it down to make space for the donated cells, explained study co-author Dr. Joseph Leventhal, a Northwestern transplant surgeon. Five patients who had the dual immunity a year later were weaned off all drugs. Two others whose hybrid immunity faded are faring well using a low dose of one anti-rejection drug. One patient needed a repeat transplant after an infection and didn't get to try weaning.

Much more study is needed to find the best approach but "the results are striking," Dr. Tatsuo Kawai of Massachusetts General Hospital wrote in an accompanying editorial. He is part of a team that in 2008 reported the only other success with a small number of mismatched transplants.

How Parents Should Use Project Guides | Special Education

A Project Guide gives directions and possibilities to a child on how to pursue their project. At the same time, it weaves a variety of learning objectives into the project activities. These learning objectives enhance and enrich the project, making it more memorable to the child.

When I was a middle school child, I made several attempts at building a go-cart. None of those attempts was successful. I paid a welder to do some welding; my plan did not work and my money was lost. My most successful contraption pitched me onto the asphalt, leaving me bloody, because I had not considered ?play? in the wheels and breaking requirements. Yet I remember what I did learn from those attempts far more vividly than anything in ?school.?

What if I had been presented with a guide, back then in the ?60s, and told that my creative desire to construct a go-cart out of anything I could get my hands on was my schooling and that there were some physics and measurement realities I needed to consider in order to end up with a successful go-cart. What if I had also been given some reading about making go-carts and had been asked to write a report and share with others my go-cart project. And that I could do all that instead of sitting in a boring desk all day? In fact, what if there were educational money I could access to make the whole thing work?

There is no question that I would have reached much further than I actually did, and learned far more, most of which would be remembered today.

Parents should treat the guides as guides, not as controls. A child may take the project in directions not found in the guide. Great! Maybe parts of the guide are a bit much for a particular child. Feel free to scale them back; but to ensure a breadth of learning, don?t eliminate those parts.

As you work with the guides, you will discover that they are very flexible. The guides can easily be adapted from one child to the next or from one part of the country to the next. A simple bit of Internet research can replace those things that are not useful to your family with things that are. Because you have the guide already, you know exactly what to look for when you make changes.

Doing the project is what catches the enthusiasm of the child, but sharing the project with others is both what makes it valuable, and what seals learning in a child?s mind. Food from the garden should be cooked and served to the family in at least one special festival meal. A short story should be polished and read aloud for the enjoyment of others. Even better, it should be posted on the Internet for strangers to read and enjoy.

The child should join any sort of membership club or association related to the project, both to be part of something bigger than themselves, and to gain access to experience mentors. Any kind of show or contest is a great incentive and place to share the project with others.

Projects will always begin with great excitement, but the parents must help impart encouragement to their children to persevere until the project is finished and sent in for evaluation.

But at the same time, the project should remain a joy to the child, especially during the middle school years. Too much academic work required can easily make the whole thing too much like school. Remember, we learn little of what is ?scholastic,? we learn far more of what is real and needful to us.

11 dead after suicide attack on Nigerian church

A suicide bomber blew himself up outside a Catholic church in central Nigeria on Sunday, killing seven people and sparking panic in which security forces shot three others dead.

It was the second suicide attack on a church in the flashpoint central city of Jos in two weeks, after a February 26 attack claimed by Islamist sect Boko Haram killed three people and injured dozens.

Nigerian President Goodluck Jonathan condemned Sunday's bombing and reaffirmed his government's determination "to end the spate of mindless attacks and killings".

Jos, a faultline in Nigeria's Muslim-Christian divide between north and south, was tense in the aftermath of the bombing amid fears of a reprise of deadly riots which followed last month's attack.

"There are rumours of reprisals from Christian youths, but we hope the security agents are on top of the situation as they have cordoned off the area," said Alhassan Danjuma Aliyu of the National Emergency Management Agency (NEMA).

Worshippers were filing out from Sunday mass in St. Finbar's Catholic church when the suicide bomber crashed his bomb-laden car into the gate, killing seven people and leaving a dozen others dazed and injured on the ground, Plateau State government spokesman Pam Ayuba said.

Three men were then shot as security forces fired on a crowd of onlookers who gathered after the blast.

"There were 10 dead -- seven parishioners and three that were shot dead by soldiers," in a bid to disperse the crowd, Ayuba told AFP.

The bomber was also killed, "mutilated beyond recognition".

Boy scouts tried to stop the car, he said.

"The security guards, who were mainly members of the Boys Brigade, tried to prevent the car from entering the compound and in the process the car exploded."

Three people died at the scene, emergency agency spokesman Yushau Shuaib said. Several others were reported to be in a critical condition.

Emergency workers said the death toll could have been higher had the bomber managed to get the vehicle closer to his target. "The bomb exploded before he could get to the church," said Shuaib.

Peter Umoren, the parish priest at the church, told AFP seven of his parishioners were killed while 12 others were injured in the blast.

"We lost seven church members while 12 were injured and have been taken to the Plateau state specialist hospital and the airforce military hospital for treatment," he said.

He said there were a total of four suicide bombers, two in the car and two on a motorcycle escorting it, all of whom were killed. There was no immediate confirmation of his claim.

The blast blew out church windows and cracked the wall, an AFP reporter at the scene said, adding that the engine of the car was detached from its shattered body and flung into the church compound.

Jonathan called on the population "to remain patient and refrain from taking matters into their own hands through actions such as reprisal attacks, as government continues to take the battle to the merchants of terror and close in on their locations, funding and sponsors".

Rioting that followed the previous bombing killed a further three people, believed to be Muslims.

The worst recent attack on a Catholic church was on December 25, when 44 people were killed during a mass to celebrate Christmas in a town outside the capital Abuja.

Jos lies in the so-called middle belt region dividing the mainly Muslim north and predominantly Christian south, and hundreds of people have been killed in clashes between Muslim and Christian ethnic groups in recent years.

Violence blamed on Boko Haram, whose goals remain largely unclear, has since 2009 claimed more than 1,000 lives, including more than 300 this year, according to figures tallied by AFP and rights groups.
